Marvel has enough characters to add one to the contenders every six weeks for 875 years

Summary

  • Marvel Rivals promises a new character every month and a half.

  • With at least 7,000 heroes and villains in comics, it won't take long for Rivals to run out of ideas.

  • That's about 875 years of roster additions if he keeps his month and a half promise.

The director of Marvel Rivals somewhat surprisingly confirmed this week that the team behind him will aim to add a new hero to their roster every month and a half. That's one hell of a tall order and we'll see how long the developers can keep up with this pace. One thing they won't have to worry about is running out of content to draw from, at least not for another 800 years or so.

Marvel has been creating characters for their comics for 86 years, so naturally there are a lot of them. You may not even realize how many heroes and villains its writers and artists have invented over that time, partly because no one seems to know. A rough estimate is 7,000, and if that number is even close to correct, that gives Rivals developers 875 years of roster additions.

NetEase shuts down Rivals cheaters in a big way.

Marvel Rivals Media said it will take 875 years to run out of heroes and villains if NetEase sticks to its guns and adds a new character every month and a half. A claim so outlandish that at first I thought it was a joke. It turns out that's not what most comic book fans estimate, with between 7,000 and 8,000 superpowered beings spread across the vast Marvel multiverse.

Marvel Rivals has nearly 900 years of content to offer

And you thought the list of 33 characters was big

Even this may be a conservative estimate. There are over 56,000 entries on the Marvel Wiki. However, this also includes regular characters. Maybe if Rivals has been running for 875 years and there are no more superpowered characters left to consider, we can start adding regular characters to the game. Until then, I'm not particularly interested in finding out how effective Aunt May would be when being swatted by Venom's tendrils.

While concerns have been expressed about the speed at which NetEase intends to introduce new characters to the Rivals roster, most of them are not rooted in the team running out of ideas. It's more of a job that will require new heroes and villains to arrive every month and a half. That's a tall order, and even if there's a backlog of new characters in the pipeline, which seems likely based on various leaks, there will come a time when the promised schedule will eventually catch up.

There are only two characters that we know for sure will be coming to Rivals in the very near future – The Thing and the Human Torch. Their additions arrive midway through the first season, joining Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman to complete the Fantastic Four.
