The rapper's love for the medium is making a comeback
A lot of people reacted very viscerally to how Megan Thee Stallion expressed her anime fandom, and her appearance at the Crunchyroll Awards earlier this year was rather divisive, with many accusing her of jumping on the explosion of anime's popularity in the 1920s ; However, throughout her career and even before her rise to the stardom she now enjoys, Megan was an avid anime watcher, referencing titles like My Hero Academia, Sailor Moon, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter and Jujutsu Kaisen in her music.
The song “Otaku Hot Girl”, taken from her 2024 album of the same name, features English voice actor Yuji Itadori repeating the character's famous line about liking “tall girls with big asses”). Many of the visuals in the music video for “Neva Play” are inspired by the anime, with various moments featuring the rapper and her collaborator, RM of BTS, while the song “BOA” is named after One piece Boa Hancock's character while also aligning with the snake theme presented in the nomenclature and visuals of her hit song “HISS” music video.
Few Megan fans can forget her “Todoroki Tina” era, which combines her Pimp C-inspired “Tina Snow” persona with her love of My Hero Academia character Shoto Todoroki. In addition to frequent anime references in her music, Megan has created many cosplays from various series, such as Jolyne Kujo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventurewhile her dress for the Crunchyroll Awards was inspired by a design by Bruno Bucchiarati. She revealed her plans to make her own anime series on Stationhead, but we won't be seeing that anytime soon as she's been focusing on her music. There are various paths the Megan Thee Stallion anime could take, with many fans begging for some kind of magical girl series, but only time will tell.
