My Happy Marriage Season 1: Genre-bending romance
With its remarkable genre-bending approach, My Happy Marriage has proven to be one of the best romance anime of recent years.
Season two is the premiere is planned for January 6, 2025and will probably be added to Netflix at the same time, as happened with the first season.
A story like Cinderella
My happy marriage touched the hearts of fans with its historical setting, supernatural themes and Cinderella-like story. Set during the Taisho era (1912-1926), the story follows Miyo Saimori, who is forced into servitude by her abusive stepmother. Dreaming that this nightmare will end when she gets married, Miyo soon discovers that her family's betrothed is Kiyoka Kudou, who is known to be cold and cruel. After moving into his house, Miyo begins to discover that her future husband may not be such a monster.
The anime is based on Akumi Agitogi's novel of the same name. It was first published independently online in Japan and later acquired by Kadokawa in 2019. Since then, eight volumes have been published under the Fushimi Shobo label, all illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka. Yen Press publishes books in the US.
As of 2018, there is also a manga adaptation by Rita Kohsaka, which has five volumes so far. Square Enix publishes the manga in both Japan and the US. The action film was released exclusively in Japanese theaters in March 2023.
Where to watch and what's next
My happy marriage premiered last year on July 5, and the first season ended with 12 episodes on September 20, 2023. Netflix broadcasts the series with subbed and dubbing options. Episodes were added at the same time as they were released in Japan.
A special episode premiered on Netflix last month. Although labeled as “Episode 13”, it is actually an OVA originally released in Japan in March as part of a special package for the 8th volume of the novel. It's worth noting that Netflix typically doesn't acquire streaming rights to content that was originally only meant to be available to buyers of special bundles – but it's too early to know if this is just an exception, or if this could mean Netflix is taking a different approach to anime.
Netflix has already confirmed that it will stream the new episodes.
