Sony has made a change in approach PlayStation Plus the games are distributed in the US, UK and Japan, but the good news is that this may be temporary. PlayStation Plus has undergone some dramatic changes over the years, with perhaps the biggest coming when the service was effectively combined with PlayStation Now, ultimately splitting its offering into three different tiers.
PlayStation Plus Essential is the basic version of PS Plus and includes online multiplayer access as well as a selection of free games each month. The next step is the Extra tier, which gives subscribers access to a rotating library of PS4 and PS5 games. And finally, there's the PS Plus Premium tier, which includes everything in the previous tiers, plus access to a selection of classic games from the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP libraries.

Thanks to some unexpected news, PlayStation Plus subscribers know a handful of games that will be available in Essential, Extra and Premium in September.
Sony is changing the way PS Plus games are added
Now, PS Plus is potentially undergoing another change, starting with new Extra and Premium games for June 2026. Sony is experimenting with how it releases PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium games, so instead of all new games for June 2026 being added on June 16, they'll be spread out instead. Regions outside of the US, UK, and Japan will get the games all at once as normal, so this seems like an arbitrary change. It just means that PlayStation Plus subscribers will have to wait longer to play some of the new games and are therefore unlikely to be well received.

As part of the change, one of the new PS Plus Extra games for June 2026 was added ahead of time. Sonic X Shadow Generations is now available to subscribers. The next update will come on June 16th when Final Fantasy 16 is added to the Extra level and Guitar Man is added to the premium tier. Then on June 23 we will see the debuts Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Life is Strange: Double Exposurewhile Black desert, Blades of Fireand Farming Simulator 25 they will arrive on June 30.

Extending PS Plus Extra and Premium additions throughout the month, the service will work more like Xbox Game Pass, but the difference is that many Game Pass games are released on day one. It's less exciting to wait for games that have already been released, so the most likely scenario is that the change just annoys current subscribers. It's possible that Sony will revert the change if it proves unpopular, but that remains to be seen.
It will be interesting to see if the July 2026 PS Plus games get a similar treatment, but fans will have to wait about a month for that. The next PS Plus update will take place on Wednesday 1st July, when the free base games for July will be revealed.
