The Baldur's Gate 3 patch improves Wyll's questing and allows him to make his own decisions

It's been clear for a while now that Wyll has the least amount of content out of the main six companions in Baldur's Gate 3. Larian finally acknowledged this, but only after the updates stopped did she rule out Wyll getting any more cutscenes or even just patching the content that's in the game.

This is where the fans intervened. The modding duo worked on a series of Baldur's Gate 3 mods called the Wyll Cinematic Universe. I have played with a few of them and they are fantastic. One adds back Wyll's banter with Lae'zel, and another adds a brand new romance scene where you comfort Wyll after he makes a big decision in his quest line. Or rather, You make a big decision in your quest line – where this latest mod appears.

Baldur's Gate 3 Mod completely overhauls Wyll's story

Wyll looks pensive in Baldur's Gate 3. He is a human with one blue, one red and one black eye. It has horns. He wears silver and red armor. (1)

If Fate Chose Differently by Nexus Mods user Magnetuning completely overhauls the way the decision regarding Wyll's pact with Mizora is handled. Now, instead of the player telling him what to do, they can influence him throughout the game, secretly giving you “points” for breaking the contract or keeping it.

This is how many decisions are made for other partners. While you can certainly tell Shadowheart to disobey Shar in Act 2, you'll have an easier time if you've consistently resisted her Sharran Doctrine since Act 1. Likewise, Gale can go against the player and seek divinity if your dialogue options have unwittingly pushed him to that path.

In order for Wyll to have this, new dialog options are opened up with this mod. Everything is done using bits of dialogue from elsewhere, so there's no AI.

“The changes the mod makes are quite extensive,” says Magnetuning. “This includes the addition of over 60 new connected and repurposed voice lines for Wyll through the game as part of a new scoring system and reworked Act 2 and 3 scenes. There are also several unique connected lines for the narrator.”

It's a shame these changes fell on the fans, but at least it gives Wyll more autonomy over his life. Larian admitted that it detracted from Wyll's writing and tried to explain why. Its writer basically had to take some time off sick during development, giving him little time to wrap everything up once he returned. This meant scrapping his personal quest and instead linking it to the story of the Duke of Ravengard.
