Two crowns of the kingdom
One of the best side scrolling base building games
In this article, we will cover the different types of base building, just to avoid simply repeating titles with the exact same mechanics. Two crowns of the kingdom it does away with the complex, multi-menu user interface that defines so many of these projects, instead giving players just a few options: move left, right, or flip coins. Despite being so simple on the surface, the game is surprisingly strategic and punishing.
Instead of directly building bases, you spend coins and then create contextual buildings based on your chosen landscape. Upgrading the city center and global technologies will give you access to better materials. Even if you can't build fancy castles, Two crowns of the kingdom uses base building as a means of territory control and biome manipulation.

The 8 Most Fun Base Building Games, Ranked
The base building subgenre has grown a lot in recent years, but nothing beats the fun of these base builders in particular.
While not as visually impressive as some of the larger base-building fantasy games, Mind over magic deserves a mention because it is one of the purest examples of this theme. Not only does its world absolutely ooze “fantasy”, but base building and management is also a priority. Yes, you build a spell academy rather than whatever you want, but this base is pretty much the whole game.

Age of Darkness: Final Stand
Push Back The Creeping Veil
Age of Darkness: Final Stand is a top-down tower defense game with base building elements. Players will command the armies of humanity's last bastion and try to fight off hordes of monstrous creatures while expanding. Encouraging NPCs to gather resources and deciding how to deploy defenses are crucial aspects of the game, making it strangely similar to a city builder.
Each map is procedurally generated and initially covered with a war mechanic called a veil. This means that players will need to be flexible in building their bases and no two approaches will be the same. While the primary goal is of course survival, the winning condition Age of Darkness: Final Stand is to drive away the veil completely, so a lot of building will be required.

Veiled
Build a castle and find the truth
IN Veiledplayers begin as one of the last of the Flameborn. The Flameborn are a near-extinct race of humans who, through their own arrogance, unleashed a corrupted mist across the land known as the Shroud. One of the main goals of this game is to find out what happened and restore some semblance of order to the country. The player's main obstacle in doing so is living creatures that come into contact with the mist. Most will become terrifying monsters that players will have to fight and protect themselves from.
The best method of protecting important resources from the influence of the Shroud is to build a base, which players can do with significant customization. Not only is the placement up to the player, but buildings are built in small blocks with completely flexible window and door placement along with an intuitive set of tools and controls.

Dungeons 3
Amazingly sarcastic and irreverent
Dungeons 3 is a continuation of the successful one Dungeons franchise that recently won another title (Dungeons 4). Despite not being the newest entry in the franchise, few can disagree that the humor and level design of this strategy building game make it a joy to play. IN Dungeons 3Players act as the hand of evil, building a base in each level, expanding an army, and opposing those pesky forces of good.
As a reward for each new victory, players can enjoy the sarcastic and hilarious story of the Dark Elf Thalia, convert heroes to the side of darkness and build increasingly complex underground paradises. In addition, this title does not spoil anything, since it is a little older and often quite discounted.

In Growing
Become the Vampire Overlord of Your Dreams
In Growing tops the list of fantasy base building games due to its incredibly detailed base building, rich fantasy world, and role-playing potential. IN In Growingplayers are recently awakened vampires gathering the power to usurp Dracula himself, and of course they'll need their own gothic castle to do so.
Castles are built on plots of land that dot the map, with nearly 200 different potential locations. Once players have chosen a location, they will be able to build the castle bit by bit with resources…liberated… from nearby townspeople. The building potential is endless and the community loves showing off their best bases as a castle tour like the one from Spiteful Crow on YouTube.

Dwarven fortress
One of the deepest fantasy base building games
An all-time cult classic that entered alpha in 2006 and didn't make its full debut on Steam until 2022, Dwarven fortress is arguably the definitive PC building game. Compared to modern titles like Veiled, Bay 12's game is nowhere near as visually impressive, and its minimalistic top-down perspective doesn't lend itself to grandiose fantasy. However, mechanically and thematically Dwarven fortress is almost untouchable as a base builder, with the main mode revolving entirely around fortress building and management.
Each playthrough creates a unique world, and players must carefully consider a location's strengths and weaknesses before venturing into it. They then slowly begin building farms, neighborhoods, defenses, and workshops, creating a fortress that is massive in scale and deep in systems. Despite the presentation style Dwarven fortress it still feels down to earth with its complexity, both in terms of what you can build and the story opportunities that naturally arise.
Songs of Syx deserves honorable mention.
