The best new must-play FPS games (yet)

The FPS world has grown considerably since the start of 2026, and so many amazing games have been added in such a short time that it can be hard to even keep up with all the greatness. We saw the return of iconic franchises, long-awaited releases that were teased long ago, and some surprise hits that managed to show that even smaller developers and brand new names can compete with the big dogs at the table.

The Far Far West

Helldivers Meets Cowboy Chaos

Details:

  • Quick missions with multiple objectives

  • Satisfying progressive systems for all kinds of players

The Far Far West is one of the most surprising releases of 2026, not just in terms of FPS games, but the entire industry. Thrown right in, you and a group of friends are tasked with galloping through the wilderness in search of treasure, all while completing objectives and battling hordes of enemies.

The game loop is very similar Helldivers 2where you spawn and have all the freedom to move between locations and get as much gold and resources as you want. After successfully completing a mission, you'll return to the saloon, where everything from weapons to your personal stats can be upgraded, along with some pretty interesting additions like jokers that fundamentally change the way you play the game. Even though it's in early access, I was still impressed with how much content there is, and I for one can't wait to see what they have planned later.

MOUSE: PI for rent

Black and white never looked so stylish

Details:

  • Classic rubber hose animation style

  • Boomer-shooter close shootout

MOUSE: PI hit my radar when I saw the first trailer, and I can honestly say that the finished product not only meets my expectations, but exceeds them. Playing as classy detective Jack Pepper, it's up to you to uncover a cheesy conspiracy that's sweeping the city, and a healthy dose of gunpowder is the only thing that can bring the truth to light.

Saving with Samus in Metroid Prime 4 Beyond (2025)

5 FPS Better Than Borderlands video game series

Borderlands is the king of FPS games and looter shooters, but could the next series steal the crown?

Like many boomer shooters, the focus is on fast-paced action and high-octane gameplay, and you have access to a long list of weapons and tools to ensure the pace never slows down to a standstill. If you're an FPS fan looking for a unique take on the classic formula, you'll be hard-pressed to find another game this year that packs the same charm and energy as MOUSE: PI.

Road to Vostok

Details:

  • Single player extraction loop

  • Overall more exciting and challenging

Extraction shooters have exploded in popularity over the past few years, but most of them opt for a PvP style of play that pits you against many other hungry players looking to get the same supply of loot. In case Road to Vostokthat idea is completely removed, instead throwing you into a world full of AI enemies who are increasingly more than capable of fighting.

Rather than constant firefights, the game emphasizes tension, resource management, and thoughtful decision-making, allowing you to really control the pace of encounters without ever feeling too overwhelming. I was completely blown away by the game's dedication to atmosphere and spent countless sessions just exploring the maps and learning how to hit enemy camps, because without this time to prepare, all that precious loot would quickly be gone.

4

Luna Abyss

Definition of Bullet Hell

Details:

  • Mind-boggling locations and enemies

  • A rewarding shootout that feels truly impressive

Luna Abyss it's fast, scary and full of fun that incorporates hellish action and high mobility to give you an FPS experience you'll find hard to put down. Combining high-speed first-person movement with dense bullet-hell encounters. As you descend into the abyss below, you're forced to complete various missions that push even players to their absolute limits, both in terms of aiming and sheer stamina.

The 8 Best FPS Video Game Trilogies of All Time, Ranked

These trilogies aren't just good; they helped redefine the entire genre of first-person shooters in one way or another.

The game's biggest strength is how different it is from traditional shooters. Drawing inspiration from titles such as Return and Fateyou're focused on both movement and your aim, and as someone who really appreciates distinctive gameplay styles, I have no problem rating it as one of the best FPS games released in years.

5

Resident Evil Requiem

The Hot Streak continues

Details:

  • It switches between pure survival horror and action

  • A perfectly executed dual story

Resident Evil Requiem shows once again that Capcom is truly unmatched in the survival horror genre. Unlike many other modern games and remakes, you can actually choose between first-person and third-person gameplay, with the former bringing with it a much more intense and intimate style of play that makes the haunting harder and the action feel grittier than ever before.

The dual story between Grace and Leon is so well done and I never felt like I was lingering with one character for too long, always between pure fear and survival horror at the perfect moment. I ran my first game in third person, but upon re-examination from a different perspective, I actually prefer the latter, and there's basically no horror game that can hold a candle to the competition in the broader genre, both in 2026 and in the past.
