The idea of Microsoft's gaming arm holding an event in January isn't too far-fetched, as the Xbox Developer Direct took place in January 2023 and January 2024. The latest showcase highlighted many of the most anticipated titles of the year, from Square Enix. Vision of mana to the recently released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The 2024 Xbox Developer Direct focused heavily on Openwhich was eventually pushed back from 2024 and is currently scheduled for release on February 18, 2025. With the new year upon us, many believe that Xbox is preparing to tease what fans can look forward to in the next 12 months.

In a new Bluesky post, The Verge's Tom Warren expressed his belief that the Xbox launch will come sometime in January 2025. “I feel like Microsoft has finally hit a good cadence with the release of Xbox Game Pass, especially with recent drops like Indiana Jones and what awaits us in 2025,” he wrote. “Open, South of midnight, Fate, Towerborne, Fable, Outer worlds 2and more to come next year. I'm also expecting an Xbox event in January.” Warren isn't the only one expecting something big from Xbox next month, as Windows Central executive editor Jez Corden previously mentioned that The Game Awards 2024 won't feature many first-party announcements from the company, instead it says that Xbox may hold its own event in Q1 2025.
Xbox Developer Direct may come in January 2025
As Warren noted, 2025 is shaping up to be a busy year for Xbox, with many first-party titles heading to PC and Xbox Series X/S soon. Of the aforementioned games only Open has a specific release date, with all other titles simply dropping sometime during the year. Industry insider Jeff Grubb recently mentioned that one of Xbox's major titles has been delayed until 2026, although it wasn't revealed which title he was talking about. Many fans believe this Fable is an unfortunate title as very little of his gameplay has been detailed so far.
Going forward, Phil Spencer has hinted that Xbox exclusivity is no longer a top priority, with the CEO saying first-party titles could make their way to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Recent comments suggest that titles previously thought to be Xbox exclusives could launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5 in the future as Xbox looks to expand and bring in new fans. According to Matt Booty, president of game content and studies at Microsoft, the decision to release first-party titles on other platforms will be made “on a game-by-game basis.”
