Anime fans are passionate about what they love. While this is usually a positive thing, there are times when fans go too far. Season 3 One-Punch Man has been a rollercoaster so far. While there are elements of the new season that fans like, most of them have been very critical of it.
The second season drew the ire of fans due to animation and pacing issues, and season 3 director Shinpei Nagai faced an uphill battle. The director has done his best to communicate with fans through social media, but it seems that high expectations and continued frustration with JCStaff's handling of season two has led to a boiling point, culminating in the director's departure from social media.
One-Punch Man Season 3 The discourse has become chaotic
Whenever a new season is released for such a popular series as One-Punch ManThere will certainly be a lot of discussion about it on the internet. It's perfectly fair for fans to debate what they like and dislike about the season and share any criticisms they have. But there were points where the discussion around OPM season 3 turned poisonous.
The first season of the anime set the bar really high and most fans will look to it as the gold standard for any future adaptations. The transition from Madhouse to JCStaff brought not only a change in style, but also a change in quality. Season 2 was widely panned due to the animation issues that Season 3 still suffers from. It's fair for fans to be upset with the inconsistent quality of the anime, but Nagai has become a lightning rod for criticism, with many overlooking the hard work he and the rest of the JCStaff have put into making Season 3 as good as it can be.
“That's disturbing. Let's all stop arguing with each other. Let's talk about something fun instead.”
The saddest thing about this whole situation is the negative toll it took on Nagai. The director has made what appears to be a serious effort to communicate with fans and get people excited for the new season. Plenty of fans showed their support for him online, but it looks like a select few spoiled what should have been the biggest moment of his career.
For fans keeping up with the new season, it's important to remember that there's still work to be done. Reacting to individual episodes each week is part of the seasonal anime experience, but the final product isn't out yet. Things could get better, and by the end of it all, even Nagai's biggest naysayers might be singing a different tune.
