The Pokemon TCG is preparing to release its next expansion in Japan, Abyss Eye. Mega Darkrai will be the main star of the set, and Pokémon just gave the world its first look at the debut Mega Evolution card.
Mega Darkrai is coming to the Pokémon TCG
Mega Darkrai wasn't introduced to the video game until late 2025, so it's really one of the first times Pokemon had to give the Dark-type its own card. While some of the base game Mega Evolved Pokémon from the base game Legends: ZA have already been welcomed into the TCG, Darkrai will have the honor of being the first Mega Evolution from the latest DLC for the main Pokémon line, Mega Dimension, to get its own card.
Lego is letting fans design its first-ever Pokemon TCG set
The winner of the Lego Pokemon TCG contest will see their set become a reality and even make money selling it.
So far, only the Japanese version of the newly revealed Mega Darkrai ex card has been revealed, as none of the cards in the English equivalent of the set, which will be released later this year, have been confirmed. However, thanks to Toine L. (via PokeBeach) who translated the card, we know what Mega Darkrai will be capable of in the game.
Mega Darkari's moves are Abyss Eye and Night Raid, an already powerful move that deals double damage if you bench Pokemon with damage tokens. When Mega Darkrai is defeated, your opponent can take all three prize cards.
Abyss Eye And Pitch Black will be swarming with dark types
Abyss Eye will lean heavily on Dark-types, as all Pokemon-based cards revealed for the upcoming expansion are of the same type as Mega Darkrai. The cards Inkay, Malamar, Chi-Yu and Zarude were all revealed, along with the main character – and cover star of the Abyss Eye booster pack – ex Mega Darkrai.
The set is smaller, consisting of just 81 cards, though it doesn't contain any of the secret rarities you'll need to find. Abyss Eye will be available exclusively in Japan starting May 22, 2026. As for the English equivalent, this Mega Darkrai card and almost certainly every other Abyss Eye card revealed so far will be available outside of Japan via the upcoming Pitch Black expansion, due out on July 17, 2026.
Hopefully all the wrinkles in the new Pokémon Center early access system will be ironed out by then. Plans for a new way to purchase desired items from the Pokemon Center were revealed last week as The Pokemon Company finally tried to do something about its serious scalping problem. Whether this will be enough to help the hobby in the long term is up for debate, and it will likely be a case of trial and error for these first few drops, including Pitch Black, when pre-orders open this summer.
