In October 2023, Nintendo announced that the Wii U and 3DS Nintendo Network services would be retired and no longer available from April 2024. While many players have moved on from these systems, some were understandably still upset, as ending the Nintendo Network would completely remove the ability to play online with anyone on the site. Unfortunately, Nintendo didn't back down and went ahead with their plan, blocking access to the network in April, but several fans decided to stay online on the servers long after. Now the last person finally had to give up due to a technical problem.

Taking to Twitter, the last remaining player on the closed Nintendo Network servers revealed that he finally lost his connection to the Nintendo Network after remaining determined to stay online in April. Fishguy6564 has been playing for seven months Mario Kart 7 on online game servers, all alone. Turning off their device would mean losing access to it. Unfortunately, after all this time, it seems that their 2DS had a bug and the device crashed, disconnecting them, thus knocking the very last person out of Nintendo's online network from this era of gaming.

Many players came out of the woodwork to share their thoughts, including how impressed they were that Fishguy6564 lasted as long as they did. It seems that many are still upset that the Nintendo Network was removed in the first place. Lcd101, one of the players who made sure to stay online Splatoon after the Wii U servers were shut down he praised Fishguy6564 for their incredible months of effort as they themselves lost connectivity in 68 days due to a router issue.
