From October 31, body horror Substance is available to watch on streaming service Mubi, perfect timing for the release of such an amazing horror film. Body horror has been experiencing something of a renaissance in the last few years with high profile releases from the likes of Brandon Cronenberg Infinity pool.
What people seem to have loved about the film was that it wasn't afraid to shock its audience. The film follows Elizabeth Sparkle (played by Demi Moore), a former Hollywood movie star who is now a TV show host. However, on her 50th birthday, her boss tells her that she is too old to continue hosting the show and they want to find a younger, sexier version of her. That's when Elizabeth is offered something called “the substance”, which promises to transform her into a younger and better version of herself. However, things don't quite go according to plan and Elizabeth ends up going through a pretty traumatic and shocking ordeal.
Like body horror, Substance contains some incredibly scary scenes. Substance doesn't shy away from showing the audience as much as it can, meaning it's an incredibly graphic and gory film, but it does so in a way that's unique. The film is not just about shock value. It's about the struggle of being a woman working in Hollywood, especially if that woman is past a certain age. This central message is conveyed very clearly, and the writer/director makes perfect use of the body horror subgenre to demonstrate it. It's also great to see Demi Moore back on the big screen. She delivers a riveting performance in the film, which also features a star turn from Moore's co-star Margaret Qualley.
Substance it ended up grossing just over $37 million at the worldwide box office, which is very impressive considering the film was made on a small budget of $17,500,000. The film also had a relatively limited theatrical release worldwide, yet managed to attract a significant audience and a lot of buzz, especially after the film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film's success proves that people these days simply want to watch more interesting films.
