The terrible leadership of the fire nation killed the nation

Four Nations in Avatar: The Last Airbender they were thrown off balance forever when the leaders of the Fire Nation decided the rest of the world was ripe for the taking. Fire Lords of past centuries or millennia such as Zoryu may not count on this, but when Fire Lord Sozin came to power after his father Taisa, everything went wrong. It was the fire nation's leadership, not the common people or the culture of the country, that led to the disaster.

The Fire Nation's own culture is remarkable, shaped by sheer willpower, refined theatrical flair, and an emphasis on respect and custom. The island nation is also home to the world's first example of industrialization, to the extent that Fire Lord Ozai's royal banner depicts him standing amidst the gears and exhaust pipes of progress. However, Ozai and his fellow Fire Lords and the eventual Fire Lord nearly brought the Fire Nation to ruin. Even after heroes like Aang and Zuko saved the day, some scars remained that only slowly faded over time. In some ways, the damage is done and the glory days of the Fire Nation are over, at least in the minds of the people.

The fire lords valued ambition and cunning over benevolence

Zuko's own family suffered greatly because of the royal rules

One of the consequences of the questionable leadership of the Fire Nation was the suffering of the royal family. Many of Zuko's own flashback sequences made it clear that he was born into a nest of vipers, even by the standards of most fictional royal families. Being a prince is never easy, despite all the high expectations, but Zuko had it bad even compared to other princes. At the time Zuko was born, the Fire Lords and their kin valued ambition and cunning above all else, with cruelty seeming to be almost the rule. Fire Lord Sozin seems to have started this trend and his long reigning son Azulon continued it. Azulon in turn passed it on to his own twisted son Ozai who spread it to his daughter Azula.

The effects of such monstrous leadership were not often seen Avatar: The Last Airbenderbecause the cartoon only had a limited amount of time to show the full effects of the Hundred War and the story was mostly about Avatar Aang himself. Even so, the Fire Lords morphed into harsh authoritarians who pushed people to their limits, and this affected everyday life in the fire nation. An example was the school Aang attended where dancing was forbidden and unruly students were sent to the coal mines.

Does Avatar Korra deserve the hate it's been getting after more than a decade?

Korra has been met with hate among Avatar fans in recent years. Should these feelings still exist after more than ten years?

That and the militaristic ways of the Fire Nation undoubtedly put a heavy strain on the country's resources and manpower, with the Fire Nation maintaining a century of conflict in distant lands. Fighting the entire world for so long must have been exhausting, regardless of the Fire Nation army's victories in places like Omashu and Ba Sing Se, along with the extermination of the Air Nomads.

Worst of all, the ill effects of the fire nation's leadership on the royal family and the country itself tended to overlap, with Azula's upbringing leading her to abuse and terrorize her own subordinates. As the crown princess, Azula projected all of Ozai's harshness towards her own people, enhanced by her own resourcefulness and drive to succeed. It eventually got so bad that Azula fired all of her staff, the Imperial Firebenders, and even her Dai Li agents, much to Lo and Li's dismay.

By the time Sozin's comet arrived, Azula was falling apart and in no condition to become a Fire Lord, yet she was about to be crowned, an alarming sign of how deep the royal family had fallen. Only Zuko's intervention and the following wild firebending Agni Kai prevented the fire nation from collapsing in Azula's unprepared hands.

The firebenders Sozin, Azulon, and Ozai also caused lasting damage to the fire nation in less tangible ways, which ended up being Zuko and Aang's problem to solve. In addition to the immense physical scars the Fire Nation leaders had inflicted on the world, these three Fire Lords had also earned the world's hatred for what was once the most prosperous and perhaps most respected empire in the world. During the eclipse invasion, Zuko made this abundantly clear when he stood up to his father and outlined his country's many transgressions. One of the best quotes from Zuko v Avatar it was how the actions of the Fire Nation inspired the world to hate the country, not admire it, and Zuko even said that the Fire Nation deserved it.

Ozai didn't want to hear it, but Zuko was right because a century of fire nation aggression made him an enemy of humanity and definitely the greatest enemy of the Avatar cycle at that time. When the war ended, lingering mental scars were present in Dark Horse Avatar: The Last Airbender comic a The Legend of Korra. Firebenders were often seen as “bad guys”, as dangerous people not to be trusted or befriended. The term “ashtray” even appeared a few months after the end of the war.

The sequel to 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' is great, but a prequel would be better

A prequel to 'Avatar: The Last Airbender', exploring the pre-bending world or the lives of the previous Avatars, is much needed.

Perhaps most damning is the fact that even in the time of Avatar Korra, decades after the flashback sequence jumped in the timeline, Firebenders were often feared or still seen as villains. Professional bending athletes got along well with their fellow Firebenders, but the common people of Republic City felt differently. The masked bloodbender Amon took advantage of this fact and falsely blamed the non-existent Firebender for the loss of his family and the fake burn scars on his face. Fire Lord Izumi, the daughter of Zuko, was terribly reluctant to go on the offensive even after saving the world against Kuvira's Earth Empire. Izumi was persecuted and shamed for her own country's many transgressions, all because Fire Lords like Sozin and Ozai decided that war was better than peace and true prosperity.
