AND Star Wars Film drought
It's been five years since Lucasfilm released a Star Wars movie on the big screen. Despite grossing over $1 billion at the global box office, rise of skywalker directed by JJ Abrams, it concluded the divisive sequel trilogy with mixed reviews at best. If The Mandalorian if it hadn't premiered on Disney Plus around the same time, 2019 would have left the franchise in a very bleak place.
Since then, Disney Plus has served as the exclusive home for new Star Wars content, including original programming The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, the Acolyte, and now Skeleton Crew gives viewers new galactic adventures. While Star Wars was vital to the Disney Plus streaming library, Lucasfilm struggled to bring any new movies to the big screen. Coming The Mandalorian and Grogudirected by Jon Favreau, is set to be his first film outing in nearly seven years when it hits theaters in 2026.
Together with The Mandalorian and Grogu, there are several others Star Wars films in development. James Mangold, who directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destinyis about to direct a film telling the story of the first Jedi. Meanwhile, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, whose previous directing credits include Marvel Studios episodes Ms. Marvel, is used to direct a film set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey, who will lead the new Jedi Order. Other upcoming projects include a film by Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy and a new trilogy to be written by Simon Kinberg.
Lucasfilm still has cold feet
With multiple projects in the works, casual fans might read headlines like this and assume that Star Wars he has an exciting film future ahead of him. However, devoted fans are wary. Not only has there been a mixed reception to the last few film outings, but an embarrassing number of Star Wars movies were announced only to never see the light of day.
Rian Johnson, writer and director the last jedi, was set to helm a new trilogy of films, but has since started his own original film franchise with Knives Out. game of thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss were set to write and produce a new series of films, but canceled their contracts with Lucasfilm. AND Rascal Squadron the film he will direct Wonder Woman Directed by Patty Jenkins, it was supposed to premiere in 2023, but has since been delayed. And when was the last time anyone heard anything about that movie Thor: Love and thunder was director Taika Waititi developing?
With many original TV series, Lucasfilm had some exciting filmmakers directing episodes and giving viewers a taste of their own creative sensibilities within Star Wars. Filmmakers such as Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Rodriguez, Lee Isaac Chung, Jon Watts, David Lowery and now the Daniels have had the opportunity to sit in the director's chair. And with Daniel's work on one episode Skeleton Crew, showcased some of their core storytelling strengths seen in their previous films. Given the right canvas, they could well lend those strengths to an impressive new one Star Wars film.
The force is strong with Daniels
The Daniels' ability to bring passionate performances out of the actors speaks for itself. Viewers can see this in the deployment in which Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe exhibited Swiss Army Man, as well as Academy Award-winning performances by Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything and everywhere at once. It is clear that anyone is cast in his hypothetical Star Wars movie, their performances will be top notch.
In the Daniel episode Skeleton Crew, the performances of the child actors were particularly noteworthy. A sentimental scene is shared between Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) and Hayna (Hala Finley) that shows tender moments. It brings greater insight into the wants and desires of the characters, which resonates deeply with the audience while also serving the narrative well.
Of course with any Star Wars movie, action is key. While characters and story are of utmost importance, audiences want to see exciting sci-fi action sequences. Daniels can do it too. Everything and everywhere at once is full of martial arts fight scenes full of energy and visual dynamism that would fit in a galaxy far, far away. Recall Battle Ke Huy Quan's fanny pack in the IRS office and replace the fanny pack with a lightsaber. In fact, casting Ke Huy Quan as a Jedi would be the most exciting thing you could see.
Action moments in Daniel's Skeleton Crew the episode is just a taste of what they might bring Star Wars. In particular, the rampage of SM-33 (Nick Frost) almost continues towards the end of the episode, showing some of the crazy action-driven characters that would scale to greater heights on the big screen.
These are the directors you are looking for
Ultimately, Lucasfilm would have made a bold and exciting choice to give Daniel their own Star Wars film. Ideally, the duo should be given a blank canvas to explore any era of the franchise they'd like and introduce their own original characters and stories. While the pair are currently working on their next project as part of their five-year film deal with Universal Pictures, they might be able to bounce back from their work on Skeleton Crew to the field for the original Star Wars film. These directors could honor the franchise by embarking on a bold new narrative that George Lucas would celebrate.
