Today marks the end of an era for Destiny 2

Today, June 9, 2026, continued support for live services officially ends for Fate 2. After receiving continuous updates for almost 9 years, Sony has decided to end active development Fate 2 after its latest update goes live, though the game will remain playable in maintenance mode for the foreseeable future. For the most loyal fans of the game, this is undoubtedly a crushing blow, because even many of those who had a complicated relationship with it admitted that a world without it is a difficult reality to accept.

Still, Bungie seems to be doing all it can to ensure Fate 2 goes out with a bang. Monument of Triumph, the game's latest defining patch, looks to be one of the most substantial updates it has ever received, with a host of new content and quality-of-life improvements that players have been asking for for years. Once it goes live on the hour Fate 2Players will likely have plenty to do after the week-long reset, but it's still not enough for many fans. The general sentiment around the game seems to be that it would be much better if it never needed Monument of Triumph.

Farewell to fate 2

Saying goodbye to Destiny 2 is the hardest thing I'll ever do in gaming

Saying goodbye to Destiny 2 hurts because I'm leaving behind not just a game, but a version of my life that I can never go back to.

Destiny 2's live service support era has come to an end

Fate 2 launched on September 6, 2017, and at the time it seemed like the franchise was finally getting the fresh start it needed. First Fate became a much better game towards the end of its lifespan, but it also took a long time to get there. Fate 2 it should have been Bungie taking everything they learned from those first three years and building a sequel that could move the series forward in a much more fulfilling and accessible way.

However, that didn't exactly happen, at least not right away. Fate 2 it had a stronger campaign and a smoother launch than the first game, but once players got to the end, many flaws began to show. The loot grind dried up too quickly and because of that the game didn't give players a good reason to keep coming back. Fate 2The Forsaken expansion finally changed that, giving the game one of its best campaigns and the kind of content that made players feel excited about its future again. Beyond Light later became the next big break, ushering in the darker era that brought Fate 2 closer to the story they would ultimately remember it for.

But now all the work, all the time and energy spent on it Fate 2 turning it into what is widely regarded as one of the best live service games ever made has led the franchise into a dark, empty future without Fate 3 nowhere in sight and little reason to keep playing beyond what Monument of Triumph adds to the game. To be clear, the game is not being taken offline, and Bungie has confirmed that the game will remain playable after active development ends. However, Monument of Triumph is still the last live service content update Fate 2meaning that the version of the game that players have known for almost nine years is coming to an end. after today Fate 2 it may still exist, but it will no longer move forward in the same way.

Destiny 2's Monument of Triumph update is the final reason to return

At least the Monument of Triumph gives Fate 2 the last great moment before the future arrives. Bungie intentionally framed the update as a celebration of everything Guardians accomplished during the game's active development. Monument of Triumph is available to all players, brings back and refreshes several parts of the game, and is designed to leave Fate 2 in a better place for anyone who wants to return after the end of active development. Obviously, this doesn't completely soften the blow, but it does give players one last reason to log in and spend time in a game that meant so much to so many people.

Although not always successful, Fate 2 it survived by giving players something else to look forward to. Even during its worst stretches, there was usually another expansion, another raid, another season or some other big change somewhere before it. However, that changes with the Monument of Triumph. Players can still log in after June 9, 2026, but they will be logging into a game that has nothing new waiting for them after the final update. Once a game that spent nearly a decade asking players to come back, Fate 2 he finally reached the end of the road.
