Dandadan is a Japanese manga created in 2021 that was adapted into an anime in October 2024 with the same intense supernatural enemy encounters as Turbo Granny. Turbo Grandma will eventually become an integral part Dandadanappearing regularly as an antagonist and a character who occasionally helps Momo and Okarun.

Turbo Grandma had a big influence on the main characters of the series in the first season. There's a lot to explore about her character, where exactly she comes from, and even her motivations. He is much more than just a simple villain for Momo and Okarun to defeat.

What is Turbo Grandma's background and motivation?

There is so much more to a character than just being an antagonist

Although Turbo Granny initially appears to be a Yokai villain for Momo and Okarun to defeat, there is much more to the character than meets the eye. In the end, it will be revealed why Turbo Grandma decided to live in the tunnel. Mom's grandmother reveals that the tunnel is where a bunch of young girls were taken against their will and killed by evil men. Soon after these passages, Turbo Granny moved into the tunnel to bring peace to the ghosts before they moved on.

Many fans noticed when Turbo Granny saved Momo in the first episode and pulled her out of the Serpoian UFO that was close to performing horrible acts, just like what happened to the girls in the tunnel. This further demonstrates Turbo Granny's need to protect young girls who may be vulnerable in a situation where they cannot defend themselves. However, despite Turbo Grandma's good intentions, she also ends up attacking innocent people who enter the tunnel.

Momo and Okarun attempt to explore the spirit world

When Momo and Okarun first meet in Dandadan anime, they both want to prove to the other that their interest exists. Momo believes in ghosts while Okarun believes in aliens. As they begin their journey together, they explore a tunnel where Turbo Granny appears to live. Eventually, Okarun encounters a Yokai spirit and tries to escape, but is unsuccessful due to Turbo Granny's immense speed. He is then possessed by a spirit and arrives to save Momo from the Serpo aliens who want to kill her.

Although this initial encounter leads to Okaruna becoming possessed by Turbo Granny, it is also when Momo is able to awaken her psychic powers against the Serpo aliens, allowing her and Okaruna to work together with their powers to stop their enemies. Turbo Granny was able to control Okarun by stealing his “banana organs”, but this ultimately leads to Turbo Granny's overarching arc to obtain Okarun's belongings. Although Turbo Grandma seems to hold a grudge against Okarun, she seems to have a soft spot for Momo as she protects her and is there when she awakens her powers.

Although Okarun's “banana organs” are now missing, he has plenty of Turbo Granny's powers and abilities, allowing him to fight alongside Momo. However, she must contain his curse to prevent it from spiraling out of control. Whenever she is not around him, such as after their defeat of the Flatwoods Monster, Okarun begins to lose control of her Turbo Granny powers and even tries to eat Momo at one point before being stopped by Momo's grandmother.

Even though he is cursed, Okarun's abilities include fast speed and reflexes, and he is also able to max out to increase his strength and attack enemies. He is also able to withstand intense attacks and survive his own shooting abilities. Teamed up with Momo, who can contain Okaruna's curse and allow him to manifest his powers at will, the two become unstoppable against almost any enemy, including Turbo Granny, when the final battle comes.

Taunting Turbo Grandma is the best way to go

Turbo Granny is not without her weaknesses, and one of the easiest things to do to control a powerful Yokai is to taunt her. Momo learns this from her grandmother, who suggests that they stop her by luring her out of Shono City, where she is most powerful. This is due to the fact that she has bonded with a spirit bound to the place. They are spirits that are attached to a specific location and become much weaker the moment they leave that space. Therefore, luring these ghosts outside of Shono City makes it much easier for Momo and Okarun to defeat them.

As suggested by Momo's grandmother, Momo and Okarun are able to easily lure Turbo Granny out of her area by taunting her and challenging her to play. This is because Turbo Granny is incredibly fast and always follows the rules. Despite some initial mishaps, Momo and Okarun are able to lead her away from Shono City, watching as she collapses in front of them.

After defeating her, the two friends notice that the ghosts of the young girls found in the tunnel are also being released. This most likely means that they are now able to move on and no longer have to live as evil spirits, despite Turbo Granny initially providing them with comfort in the tunnel. However, soon after Turbo Granny is defeated, she returns as a possessed maneki-neko and eventually becomes a supporting character to the protagonists. This is because Turbo Grandma always had good intentions to protect young girls and now she can help Momo and Okarun fight other evil forces.
