MultiVersus knocked it out of the park with his character release plan. More than any of its peers in the fighting genre, the game has produced characters regularly since its relaunch last May; seven new characters have been added in almost as many months. Each new addition to the roster has been a faithful and loving revival of the character's source material. And the newest addition to the game is no exception.
Marceline the Vampire Queen of Adventure time glory joined MultiVersus list this week as part of the Season 4 content updates. Like Raven before her, Marceline is a perfect adaptation of how she appeared in her classic Cartoon Network debut, and fans of the show will no doubt be delighted to see more Adventure time representation in the cast of the play. But even for players who aren't big fans of the original show, Marceline's arrival in the game marks a huge shift in the direction of the game, which bodes very well for future fighters.

Marceline could be the start of a good trend for MultiVersus
Marceline joins MultiVersus list with a number of moves that reference her most iconic moments from the show. Of course, he involves his guitar in his attacks, as well as various stakes and vampiric transformations. She feels exactly as one would expect her to after overeating all the seasons Adventure timeand that's great news for the future of fighter design in the game.
MultiVersus fighters are classified into four main class types: Bruisers, Tanks, Assassins, and Mages. Marceline is classified as a Bruiser in the game, but wields the speed, agility, and timing that would be expected of her given her character. It shows that the developers at Player First Games are more concerned with faithfully customizing characters than blindly committing to an arbitrary class system that might limit what a character can do.
The developers focus on customizing fighters precisely rather than being tied to a class system
These classes are good descriptions of how these characters will end up playing, with tanks like Jason being hulks that attack like trucks, and assassins like Stripe being nimble combo machines with glass jaws. And while these classes worked very well towards the end of the games lifespan, there was always a lingering potential for them to stifle the creativity of the design team when it came to rendering characters faithfully.
Some characters already suffer from the relative limitations of the class system. Superman is one such example. Although his position in MultiVersus the meta has shifted over time, the big blue scout has always been reasonably durable and is the third tank character in the game behind Iron Giant and Jason. But for a character famously described as “faster than a speeding bullet,” Clark is pretty slow in the game. He hits as hard as you'd expect from a guy who can go toe-to-toe with Darkseid, but his attacks come out so slowly that players have to be very smart and heavy on armor to get most of his combos off the ground.
Marceline's kit is a promising sign that developers are no longer handicapping their character designs based on the class system. He plays as something of a hybrid between a bruiser and an assassin, and true hybrid characters would bring so much to the game in terms of gameplay variety, but also faithful customization of certain characters. Not everyone can necessarily fit into just one of these prescribed classes, and Marceline shows that developers are ready to take a broader, more nuanced view of how to create/design fighters moving forward.
