Why you shouldn't wait for season 2 to return to the marathon

Marathon fans have just experienced whiplash following the news that Sony has taken a massive loss to damage Bungie, yet still plans to support the game. Knowing that Season 2 is likely still on track for release despite the game's disappointing sales, many players who failed may be content to mark their calendars and shelve the game until then. After all, like most extraction shooters, Marathon has entered a rough period where casual players are struggling to keep up. At least that had has entered a rough era as the recent change has done wonders to give players with free sets a fighting chance.

Marathon Players who are tired of feeling like they don't stand a chance against purple-shielded groups may have waited for a reset, but if they continue to do so, they'll be missing out on an extremely fun era of the game. With only 4 weeks left until the reset, people will soon be taking their best loot to empty their vaults, meaning players have a chance to get some rare weapons they may not have used before. And battling these tuned players doesn't seem impossible anymore, as one of the tweaks made to the starter kits in update 1.0.6.3 puts all runners at a higher level. He's so good, in fact, that he should report on faction upgrades from here.

Marathon director says Bungie has plans for “many years”.

Discussing the future of Marathon, creative director Julia Nardin reveals that the studio has plans for the game's narrative for years to come.

The green free Marathon kits are the smartest change yet

While MarathonThe short time to kill theoretically gives players a fighting chance in any fight as they have no shield and losing against a team that is fully equipped is understandably unfair. And while steep uphill battles and hard grinds for long-term enthusiasts are essential to extraction shooters, metas have emerged in the past few weeks that only the most dedicated players can take advantage of. Because of that, something needed to be changed to level the playing field, but instead of waiting for a big seasonal drop in content to do it, Bungie acted faster and addressed the issue with higher rarity free sets.

With a basic shield, some decent weapons, and some stronger healing items, good placement and smart use of the Runner's abilities are all it takes to win battles that might have seemed impossible with white kits. For casual players without emptying their vaults, this late-season tweak is essential as contracts seem more doable and PvP encounters less one-sided. While this quality of free sets shouldn't always be the norm – greens lose their value if they're always the default, and should be desirable again at the start of the season – it's a great approach to the last month before the reset happens. The positive response to the change should also tell Bungie something; it is that players would like a way to increase their free sponsored sets.

Instead of building skill tree capstones around power-ups Marathon's Rooks – a solo option not used by all players – it would be great to see them focus on making Sponsored Kits feel less miserable when running. This way, players can turn this white sponsored set into green bit by bit as they work their way through priority contracts and faction upgrades. Through the Cyberacme capstone, they could get a green backpack, Arachne could provide green weapons, MIDA could provide Runners with explosives, Nucal could dispense green heals, and Sekgen could equip Shells with white cores. MarathonThe free green sets weren't just a well-timed change that proves Bungie has its fingers on the pulse of the gaming community, but they could be a gateway to more attractive capstones to chase after non-towers. Yes, they can still be free for the full two months until Season 2, but players who grind could earn them in a few weeks to make filling their vaults easier.

Marathon Season 2 is expected to launch in June and run until August, although the exact release date is currently unknown.

Marathon update 1.0.6.3 brings more big changes

Not only should Marathon fans worried about being overmatched should consider returning as soon as possible thanks to this brilliant bit of balancing, but it's also worth highlighting the other smart changes in this particular update. Activities on each map now have a chance to drop a Prestige save, making them something worth fighting for and giving players who are too afraid of the Cryo Archive a chance for some high-end upgrades. Additionally, grenade meta spam has been stopped with stacking prevention, and CARRI's armory has been improved with better salvage crates and weekly resets for better keys. So while it's understandable that players might have been frustrated Marathon and because of that they planned to stay away until season 2, this update has ensured that it's now worth giving the game another chance before the big reset.
