Xbox has recently been in a state of layoffs and shifting projects in an effort to focus more on its big franchises. Halo, The Elder Scrolls, Doom and Wolfenstein were all mentioned as flagship franchises for the Xbox, as was Fallout, a game where we haven't had a new main title in over a decade.
With Bethesda currently busy with The Elder Scrolls 6, it was expected that the new Fallout would potentially take another decade to arrive, but it seems that process has now been sped up as it has been reported that Obsidian has been given the opportunity to develop another full-fledged Fallout game.
Xbox Has Reportedly Greenlit An Obsidian Fallout Game
That's according to a report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who claims that while Obsidian is now working on a new Fallout game, it's come at a big price. Xbox has also reportedly canceled the planned Avowed sequel and also laid off over 50 employees, which equates to roughly a quarter of the entire studio. Schreier also reports that several other unannounced projects have also been canceled.
Schreier's sources claimed that even this Avowed sequel was coming along pretty well and was expected to be revealed within the next year, but it was scrapped because it didn't fit into Xbox CEO Ash Sharma's plans. It is also reported that several developers at Obsidian will continue to work on it until Fallout is ready despite its cancellation, with some hoping it could one day release.
As for what this Fallout game will look like, we don't know for sure. It will apparently be led by Obsidian studio design director Josh Sawyer, who was also the director of Fallout: New Vegas, so there's a good chance it could end up being a sequel. There's also the possibility that it could be a full-fledged Fallout 5, given that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still years away.
Either way, it's bittersweet to hear about Obsidian potentially taking over a new Fallout. Sure, people wanted it that way, and getting Fallout sooner rather than later is also good, but it shouldn't cost a quarter of the entire studio and its new projects.
