Early reviews of Demonschool are encouraging
Demonschool received mostly positive early reviews, received a “Strong” rating on OpenCritic with an average score of 75, and two out of three critics recommended the game. Reviewers praised its distinctive tone, mixing light horror with whimsical elements for a unique experience. The game's time management system – requiring players to balance college life, hunting demons and befriending characters – has also been well-received, with reviewers praising it as having an inherent appeal to any fan of modern games. Persona games that revolve around similar mechanics. Its art style, which Necrosoft describes as evocative of 1970s Italian horror, has also won acclaim for its memorable mix of 2D sprites, 3D backgrounds and neon lights.
Demonschool's unique combat SRPG throws stats and grinds out the window
One of the more polarizing aspects Demonschool is its combat system that visually resembles Revelation: Persona due to its use of an isometric grid, although the resemblance is very superficial. In practice, developer Necrosoft makes a bold design choice by de-emphasizing stats: all characters have low HP pools and damage calculations are aggressively simplified. As a result, grinding is practically non-existent, success in combat depends on smart positioning, effective combos and strategic use of status effects. Some reviewers praised this approach for making the game highly accessible and potentially broadening the appeal of the strategy RPG genre. Others claimed that he does it occasionally Demonschool feels more like a puzzle game than a tactical RPG. This argument raises another Persona comparison, as similar criticisms have been made Persona 5 Tactics by some reviewers in 2023.
First impressions of players from Demonschool seem consistent with its critical reception. The tactical RPG currently has a “Highly Positive” rating on Steam based on over 500 user reviews. The PS4 and PS5 versions were similarly well received, earning 4.72 stars on the PlayStation Store. The Xbox Store has yet to show an overall score due to the low number of posts, but as of November 30th, its only user review gives the game a perfect five-star rating.
As Atlus continues to keep specific details Personality 6 under the hood Demonschool serves as a timely reminder that smaller teams with modest budgets can still meaningfully explore the main ideas they have created Persona series so popular in the first place. In this case, Necrosoft took a tack on Atlus' signature blend of school life, socializing, and JRPG combat while streamlining the overall experience with some bold design decisions.
