It's been over 1,100 days since Overwatch quietly retired the feature it was never meant to leave

Overwatch is trying to keep up the momentum after the forgettable first season of its Reign of Talon reboot, with some neat weekly additions, needed a 10-year anniversary tweak and the return of hero cards, all of which are coming in season 2. Season 3 is fast approaching, bringing the introduction of another hero and a brand new base map to look forward to. But there's always room to make a great game even better, and one way to do that with this particular hero shooter is to look to the past.

To be fair, there are a few classic ones Overwatch a feature that would be nice to see again. For example, Heroic Events, where players grind to unlock special cosmetics associated with a character's comic or short story, are sorely lacking. Additionally, while brand new PvE content is unlikely given the end of story missions post-Invasion, putting effort into rebuilding the beloved Archives missions in the current engine would have the community celebrating. But both of these things require a lot of time and resources, while what I would like to see back is much easier. Specifically, I'd like to see the first new batch Overwatch Trophies and achievements to chase from 2023.

…since the Cute and Pixel spray challenges still exist for every new hero, I don't understand why the trophies stopped.

Overwatch's Lifeweaver was the last hero to come with trophies

While OverwatchThe faster hero release schedule had fans bemoaning the loss of the starting cosmetics for each hero, the achievements associated with adding a character disappeared long before the hero release cadence was changed. The last set of achievements arrived alongside the Lifeweaver support hero on April 11, 2023, and while Weaver Believers and Finalists alike enjoyed chasing these unlocks, they stopped being added when fellow healer Illari came into play a few months later.

What's so weird about that? Overwatch achievements are disappearing, as far as I know, Blizzard never announced that they would stop, or said why they wouldn't be added anymore. Maybe the data showed that there wasn't enough engagement with these extra achievements to justify adding them – I'm well aware that not everyone is as addicted to PlayStation trophy hunting as I am, and that it's a niche hobby. Still, with the Cute and Pixel spray challenges still existing for each new hero, I don't understand why the trophies stopped. Surely it can't be too difficult to add them when the challenge is already coded into the game for an item in the hero gallery, so their disappearance is a real bummer.

While those who don't care about achievements won't notice they've stopped being added, those of us who do were disappointed years ago and hoped they'd reappear with each new one Overwatch update. A lot of fans may have forgotten they were even a thing, but 1000 days later I'd still love to see them come back. If they did, any player who has a Cute spray, a Pixel spray, or both could have achievements unlocked automatically, while players without sprays could get the extra nudges they need to complete hero-specific tasks. Plus, it just made each release of the hero a little more spectacular, so it would be nice to see that vibe come back.

Overwatch Trophies follows the pattern of recreating the franchise's glory days

Similar to returning hero cards after a match, Overwatch dropping the deuce from her name felt like clever nostalgia, and the return of bonus achievements would be a similar move. Sure, not everyone cares, but there are definitely other players like me who wish these little unlockers were still around. Not everyone cares about achievements and not everyone cares about sprays, but having two sprays and trophies unlocked at the same time made completing the quest a little more rewarding. Overwatch is all about power fantasy to make players feel like they're controlling a superhero, so adding another little something to tell them “good job” once they start controlling the hero would be a welcome addition.
