Earlier this week, Square Enix announced an ambitious new Final Fantasy game called Final Fantasy Resonance, the first ever HD-2D game in the series. It looked mighty impressive and became one of the most popular reveals at the show, and then it was revealed that the game is actually a retelling of the now-defunct Final Fantasy mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
When you add that to the already released Octopath Traveler 0, these are two dead mobile games that Square Enix decided to give new life by remaking them for consoles. The scope of the two games is obviously different, but if Square Enix dips into its rather large bag of defunct mobile games, then we could see some pretty interesting games announced in the future.
Nier Reincarnation fans are pinning their hopes on a remake
After seeing Final Fantasy and Octopath Traveler get new games, Nier fans seem to be one of the most vocal fan bases hoping their franchise gets the same treatment as Nier Reincarnation.
In case you weren't aware, a mobile game called Nier Reincarnation didn't launch until 2021 and featured an original story set in the same universe as Nier Automata. It was essentially a new Nier game in mobile form, and some fans of the series consider it to be the proper third Nier game that people wanted.
Unfortunately, the game's story ended in April 2024, after which it was permanently disabled and unplayable. This means that the only way to really experience the story is via YouTube playback, which is fine and dandy if you're all about the storytelling, but for those who missed out on the mobile games or aren't too interested, that's a shame.
Now, fresh off the announcement of Final Fantasy Resonance, Nier fans seem to have more hope that Reincarnation might actually be reincarnated. You can already find plenty of posts on social media calling for Square Enix to make the game the next mobile title to bring it back from the dead.
For example, a Reddit user named Ghostblind claims that the chance of a Nier Reincarnation revival is “no longer just a dream,” while a colleague named Cleansleight says their “prayers live on” following the announcement of Final Fantasy Resonance.
It would be nice to see that, especially since we're still waiting for the next Nier game since it's been almost a decade since Nier Automata. One of the biggest issues is that both Octopath Traveler 0 and Final Fantasy Resonance are HD-2D games and the games that came before them were pixel art, making the art style transition quite smooth.
Nier Reincarnation was fully 3D, which would make a similar remake quite difficult. Of course, it doesn't necessarily have to be HD-2D, but that's the trend Square Enix is showing with its mobile revivals, so we'd have to assume that's the direction the company will go for any future ones. HD-2D Nier would be pretty cool though, so hopefully Square Enix will continue their efforts on that front and Nier Reincarnation will get the revival it truly deserves.
