Sasuke and Naruto set the tone for one of the most iconic shonen rivalries of all time. As these two powerhouses grow in ways only a prodigy and a jinchuriki can, we get to see Sasuke and Naruto sharpen each other much like iron sharpens iron — becoming the strongest ninjas in the entire Naruto saga.

Naruto: 32 Strongest Characters In The Series
These Naruto characters are the strongest individuals in the series.

Between these powerful shinobi, Sasuke comes out on top with the highest number of arcs where he succeeds at humbling Naruto. Following the brutal nerfing of these fan favorites in Boruto, the good old dilemma of Sasuke vs. Naruto makes for a hot topic yet again, as much-expected power-ups for Naruto and Sasuke in Boruto seem to be well on their way.

The Land of Waves Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Awakening His Sharingan
- Manga: Chapters 1–33
- Anime: Episodes 1–19
Starting off with the Land of Waves arc in Naruto, where the sophisticated bond between Sasuke and Naruto begins to grow, Sasuke coming out stronger than Naruto is a bit of a given. With his prodigy status among his fellow genin, Sasuke shows a solid grasp of what it takes to be an up-and-coming shinobi. Besides his mastery of the Fire Ball Jutsu, Sasuke’s ability to stay calm and collected to analyze various situations is beyond what one would expect from a genin.
As we can tell from both the manga and the anime, the powers and abilities Sasuke has would make for an impressive list. Within the scope of this arc, though, Sasuke shows how adept he is at taijutsu, not to mention his use of situational awareness while helping Kakashi subdue the Demon Brothers. In contrast, this arc is where Naruto freezes the moment the battle gets real and ends up being injured by the claws of one of the Demon Brothers.
During the first battle that Team 7 has with Zabuza and Haku, Sasuke once again proves his superiority over Naruto. It is Sasuke’s finesse in shurikenjutsu that helps Naruto achieve his plan to disrupt Zabuza Momochi’s focus, freeing Kakashi from the Water Prison Jutsu. By the climax of the arc, Sasuke’s evolution of Sharingan — the Uchiha clan’s hereditary special ability — awakens as well. This leads Sasuke to see through Haku’s Crystal Ice Mirrors technique.
Admittedly, the only strength highlight that Naruto has to boast in this arc is his intense rage moment that activates the Nine-Tails chakra. While helpful in smashing all of Haku’s ice mirrors to pieces and punching Haku right out of his mirrors, Naruto’s rage mode eventually loses its steam. At that point, it hardly means Naruto’s real advantage in terms of strength, as he has zero control over this state.

The Chunin Exams Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Gaining the Cursed Seal and Improving His Taijutsu
- Manga: Chapters 34–115
- Anime: Episodes 20–67
Though this arc pushes both Sasuke and Naruto to their limits, Sasuke’s strength proves to have an edge. Duking it out with Rock Lee gives Sasuke the chance to purchase mastery with shame, leveraging his humbling defeat in one of Rock Lee’s top fights in Naruto as an opportunity to refine his taijutsu skills with the help of his Sharingan. Likewise, Sasuke puts his Sharingan to good use while cheating during the written test as well — most of which Naruto spends panicking.
As things get somewhat dicier for the team in the Forest of Death, when faced with Orochimaru’s seal techniques and creepy snake-like demeanor, both Sasuke and Naruto take on significant damage. While Sasuke ends up with a debilitating curse seal, Naruto gets subjected to the Five Elements Seal, which cuts him off from the Kyubi chakra. Close to the end of this part of the Chunin Exams arc in Naruto, though, Sasuke almost rips a sound genin’s arms off, flexing his strength — compared with Naruto spending most of the fight knocked unconscious.
Going into the semi-final phase of the Chunin Exams, Sasuke shines as a stronger fighter. Using what he learns from Rock Lee, Sasuke takes down his opponent with Lion’s Barrage — his own take on Rock Lee’s Shadow of the Dancing Leaf. Naruto, on the other hand, faces an almost certain defeat by Kiba Inuzuka in one of Naruto Uzumaki’s most transformative fights. Had it not been for a well-timed fart in the opponent’s face and Naruto’s make-do combo move, Kiba’s signature Fang Over Fang would have finished Naruto off.

The Konoha Crush Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Learning the Chidori Move
- Manga: Chapters 116–138
- Anime: Episodes 68–80
With the Chunin Exams entering the final matches, both Naruto and Sasuke step up their jutsu game. Naruto’s strategy, however, ends up being way off the mark. Though he learns the Summoning Technique, his ability to deploy it fails to match the terrain during his fight against Neji Hyuga. Sasuke, on the other hand, bets on mastering the Chidori move under Kakashi’s guidance and manages to successfully wield it against Gaara, injuring him before the match is rudely interrupted by the Suna invasion.
As the invasion part in the Konoha Crush arc in Naruto kicks off, Sasuke is the first to go after Gaara. Even though he almost gets destroyed by Gaara’s transformation in the end, Sasuke manages to outrun the other two Sand Siblings during his chase and takes a stand against Gaara’s evolving form on his own. One might argue that it is Naruto who ends up defeating Gaara, yet Naruto wouldn’t stand a chance without Gamabunta’s giant help. Overall, Sasuke controls his Sharingan and Chidori better than Naruto does his Summoning Jutsu.

The Sasuke Retrieval Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Entering Level 2 of His Cursed Seal
- Manga: Chapters 172–238
- Anime: Episodes 107–135
At first glance, this arc starts off with Sasuke giving in to his inferiority complex and his thirst for power, neither of which speaks well of his overall strength. Running off to Orochimaru just because Naruto’s power is on the rise makes Sasuke look strong only as a contender for the club of the top anime characters who are deeply insecure. Sasuke’s unattended sense of inadequacy, however, is gladly matched by Naruto’s own core wounds and insecurities.

Boruto Officially Confirms Two Ninjas That Surpassed Madara Uchiha
Madara was a legendary ninja with overwhelming strength, but he’s been surpassed by two ninjas by the time of the Boruto era.
An epic fight between the two ensues at the Valley of the End. Despite Naruto’s blended deployment of his shadow clones, Rasengan, and the Kyubi chakra, his capacity to fight is still no match against Sasuke’s Level 2 Cursed Seal, Three-Tomoe Sharingan, and Chidori combo. As a result, Sasuke leaves Naruto knocked out on the ground for Kakashi to retrieve. Even though the lack of self-mastery makes for a flaw, Sasuke still comes out stronger than Naruto.

The Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Boosting His Speed and Exploring His New Kirin Jutsu
- Manga: Chapters 282–310
- Anime: Episodes 33–53
Staying out of one another’s sight, both Sasuke and Naruto go through significant training on their way to the Tenchi Bridge arc, exploring the world of jutsu in the Naruto universe. Although they train with polar opposite goals in mind, Sasuke’s training comes off superior. As Orochimaru sets out to enhance Sasuke’s abilities in every which way, he teaches him a wealth of techniques. Naruto, however, is stuck in something akin to three years of summer school for struggling ninjas with Jiraiya without mastering any particularly powerful jutsu.
No matter what improvements we get to see in Naruto’s arsenal during the Kazekage Rescue Mission arc, Sasuke shows us how little that matters. Case in point, Sasuke enters Naruto’s mental space and uses his Sharingan to suppress the Kyubi chakra with little effort. Sasuke’s evolving speed, not to mention Sasuke Uchiha’s signature Sword of Kusanagi and lightning jutsu, bring him a Kage-level mastery. Conversely, Naruto still grapples with keeping his Nine-Tailed chakra under control during this arc.
3
The Itachi Pursuit Mission Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Turning on Orochimaru
- Manga: Chapters 343–367
- Anime: Episodes 113–118, 121–126
Although Naruto makes great strides against the Akatsuki in the Akatsuki Suppression Mission arc, he is still quite a few strides short of Sasuke’s level. Neither Naruto’s Rasenshuriken move nor his base-level training is enough to beat Kakuzu right away. Meanwhile, Sasuke keeps training under Orochimaru’s mentorship, gaining snake-like powers after turning on his shady mentor and refusing to add to the top moments Orochimaru outwits everyone in Naruto. As a result, he spends much of the Itachi Pursuit Mission arc with these abilities at his disposal.
Among his newfound powers, Sasuke gains the Power of the White Snake, masters his Cursed Seal Second State, and builds up immunity to poisons, which gives him a clear edge over Naruto at this point. Starting this arc with defeating and absorbing Orochimaru, one of the Legendary Sannin, Sasuke goes on to showcase his skill level in his response to a confrontation with Deidara, who defeats Gaara in the Kazekage Rescue Mission arc. In addition to his jutsu game, Sasuke’s battle IQ is a lot more refined compared with that of Naruto.

The Fated Battle Between Brothers Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Unlocking His Mangekyo Sharingan
- Manga: Chapters 384–412
- Anime: Episodes 134–143
With Naruto’s strength taking a dive after Lady Tsunade forbids his dangerous Rasenshuriken explorations, the Fated Battle Between Brothers arc in Naruto keeps the spotlight on the fruits of Sasuke’s training labor. Holding an obvious advantage over Naruto in more ways than one, Sasuke gets busy working on his mission — vengeance against Itachi Uchiha.
In an all-out, bloody showdown against his older brother, Sasuke unleashes his entire arsenal in a well-thought-out tactical assault. From his Three-Tomoe Sharingan and masterful blade techniques to his signature Kirin jutsu and advanced variations on the Chidori move, Sasuke becomes the living proof that training hard means fighting easy. Granted, that’s exactly what Itachi would have Sasuke think.

Boruto Is Officially Fixing The Hokage Title After 3 Years
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is finally making the Hokage a treasured position after 3 long years.
Since Itachi’s demise turns out to be pre-planned by Itachi himself, the glory of Sasuke’s triumphant vengeance against his older brother is up for debate. With that said, Itachi’s secret plan to empower Sasuke works out well, and Naruto’s rival ends up growing even stronger by the end of one of the most exciting battles in the Naruto franchise.
As the arc concludes, Sasuke awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan and gets cleansed of his cursed seal as well as Orochimaru’s insidious presence. Although his brother’s death makes for a tragic turn, Sasuke gains a lot from the fight, including his ability to deploy the Amaterasu, Kagutsuchi, and Susanoo techniques, which take his visual arsenal to the next level. Not surprisingly, Sasuke’s massive power gain becomes a humbling experience for Naruto.

The Five Kage Summit Arc
Sasuke’s Defining Moment — Asymmetrical Tactical Brilliance
- Manga: Chapters 451–483
- Anime: Episodes 197–214
By the time this arc unfolds, the arsenal of Naruto’s strengths unmatched by Sasuke gains a massive power-up from Naruto’s training days at Mount Myoboku — the Sage Mode. Acting as the key that finally resolves the Rasenshuriken conundrum, the Sage Mode allows Naruto to catch up to Sasuke’s Kage-level strength, yet to an extent. With only a five-minute time window to wield his accumulated nature energy, Naruto’s Sage Mode, however powerful, is inherently limited. Moreover, the use of Naruto’s signature Rasenshuriken move further drains it.
Conversely, Sasuke’s refined and upgraded training is powered by his nearly infinite thirst for blood, as he is now on a path to much greater vengeance. This time he has a bone to pick with Danzo Shimura — the greatest nemesis of Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto. The other elders of the Hidden Leaf Village responsible for his older brother’s sacrifice and the slaughter of the Uchiha clan are on Sasuke’s kill list too. Naturally, the sheer will behind Sasuke’s actions takes his strength to the dark depths that no amount of Naruto’s meditation somewhere in nature could help him master.
What makes Sasuke’s strength stand out in this arc is the asymmetrical tactical brilliance that he is capable of. Instead of trying to match or overpower Danzo’s use of the forbidden Izanagi technique, which makes Danzo extremely elusive in a fight, Sasuke chooses asymmetrical tactics that negate this technique altogether. By the end of the arc, Sasuke creates an opening and kills Danzo, bringing about one of the most baffling deaths in the Naruto saga and establishing his superiority in tactical excellence and sheer ruthlessness alike.
In the aftermath of the Five Kage Summit arc, Sasuke and Naruto drive their strength toward a god-tier level. While Sasuke masters his Six-Tomoe Rinnegan and his Complete Body – Susanoo states, Naruto attains total harmony between his Six Paths Sage Mode and his Asura Kurama Mode states. Their evolution irons out the contrast between their strength levels.
