If Toy Story 5 If it were a video game, it would have pissed off so many people that the morning receivers would have had to tiptoe around angry spectators, most of whom wouldn't have bought a ticket in the first place. But it's not a video game, and maybe there's something to the fact that video games aren't as mature as movies yet. This argument usually carries little weight, but when you look at and compare the major upcoming releases of beloved franchises in both worlds—the looming Toy Story 5 and upcoming God of War Laufey– it's not as waning as it sounds.
Perhaps a better form of argument is that the typical movie audience is more mature than the typical gaming audience. To be clear: there are always exceptions, that's true. But Toy Story 5 is praised for everything that God of War Laufey was torn down for any animosity towards, and even before Toy Story 5 was knocked out. God of War Laufey the criticism has been challenged by the Santa Monica developers, but unfortunately it's alive and well and hateful.
Toy Story 5 and God of War Laufey invite comparison, more than you might expect
At first glance obvious, Toy Story 5 and God of War Laufey are very different media, but that's not entirely true. Toy Story 5 is in part a celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary and has historically relied on a cast of older characters. God of War Laufey is the latest franchise installment of a 21-year-old game series, which is comparable to a relatively “younger brother” in the gaming industry. God of War she's always relied on Kratos, and even when she reappears, 90% of the time she sticks to the basic older Kratos character. God of War Laufey this is the first time that Kratos is not a playable protagonist; Toy Story 5 this is the first time that Woody is not the main protagonist. Both franchises signaled a willingness to move on from their main protagonists, but a timely response to God of War Laufey on the recent State of Play contrasts sharply with the reaction to Toy Story 5.
The reception of Toy Story 5 has been incredibly positive for all the reasons why God of War Laufey is hated
At the end Toy Story 4Woody stays with Bo Peep to help the abandoned toys find their owners—a fitting solution for the ever-respectful cowboy. Many thought it was the end of the franchise, with actor Tom Hanks even trying to say goodbye to Woody. While going back inside Toy Story 5it's not his story anymore. Toy Story 5The story is all about Jessie, with Buzz Lightyear serving as her second in command. The central conflict revolves around her baby Bonnie becoming too attached to her Lilypad tablet, which is as important as ever.
Toy Story 5's surprise performance of Taylor Swift's “I Knew It, I Knew You” at the LA Broadcast premiere was no doubt a celebration of the franchise as well.
And the early reviews were largely enthusiastic. Critics generally praised the treatment of older characters (not always obvious), Jessie's emotional core at the heart of the story, and her approach to the clichéd concept of toys versus a technical concept. New characters like Smarty Pants, new voices like Alan Cumming behind Bullsey and a few other details were sung to the heavens. In fact, it's much harder to wait for the official release Toy Story 5 June 19 across the United States.
Now it's not perfect – nothing is. Some critics have said that the opening lags due to many disjointed plots, but most of them say that it absolutely pays off in the third act. It is so heartening to see this strong reception. Upon its debut in Los Angeles, Jazz Tangcay of Variety called it a “10/10, no notes” and said she “laughed and cried at how amazing Toy Story 5 is”. Meredith Loftus of Collider said it hit her in “places I wasn't ready for” and called the film “deeply profound”, ranking it in her top 3 Toy Story films. Gizmodo's Germain Lussier sums up the reactions from beginning to end: “It's a bit disjointed at the beginning as it sets up several different storylines, but it pays off in the end with a phenomenal third act filled with the heart and humor you expect from Pixar. Top notch stuff. I laughed, I cried, I loved it.”
God of War Laufey's reaction is incredibly negative (by some) for all the reasons why Toy Story 5 is so loved
Now, I'm absolutely sure that someone somewhere is totally pissed off to see Jessie take over as Woody's main character, but it's nowhere near as platforming as the hate surrounding video games. There's a whole lexicon, from poor to ragebaiting and beyond—with rage games being a direct derivative of it, funny as it is—that's becoming more common in video game circles because of how haters approach video games. YouTube algorithms, video game audiences, etc. all focus on the lowest hanging fruit possible and the stark contrast between God of War Laufey and Toy Story 5 is proof of that.
God of War Laufey debuted at State of Play with 20 minutes of gameplay, something unheard of. Some people have reasonable, if personal, criticisms. Not everyone is sold on the idea of Phranque the Cube, understandably so. Not everyone is sure how to feel God of War Laufey runs parallel to God of War 2018/Ragnarokand no matter how great an idea it is, it's understandable. But most of the hate was directed at the new main character, Faye.
Spoilers for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok Ahead
At the end Toy Story 4 God of War Ragnarokthe story signals this Woody's Kratos' time as a main protagonist may be over. Once again, Tom Hanks tried to say goodbye to Woody, and Kratos deserves peace now that he has earned his new status as the god of hope (in the Valhalla DLC). Woody has a new role away from the limelight and so does Kratos. No one else was waiting Toy Story movie, but people expected God of War continue with Atreus as the protagonist. Strangely, though, the “I want to play God of War in my God of War game” criticism didn't apply when the other protagonist was considered Atreus, a young man, versus Faye, a woman.

Toy Story 5 he focuses on Jessie but doesn't ignore Woody. Not only is Kratos already confirmed to be Laufey in God of War, but the Santa Monica studio has already confirmed again that more Kratos the games would take place. And the sheer vitriol driven in the game, by the developers and aimlessly and by everyone on the internet is interesting when Toy Story 5 it sits right there, cool and dandy, despite having a similar structure. If God of War was about toys and Toy Story was about ancient mythologies, well, the two could be used interchangeably here. Hate goes much deeper, but the tit for the heart, the criticism God of War Laufey as reasons Toy Story 5 is praised.
The structure of the franchise is similar, but the reactions are different
Which brings me back to the original argument. It's not fair to say that video games as an art form aren't as mature as movies, but the reactions are often the opposite of maturity. Anyone has a right to dislike a game for whatever reason, but that's when you move on, accept that it's not for you, and don't engage in this media. That's wallet voting 101. Instead, gaming circles reward the expression of pointless opinions that are inherently negative. In the meantime, movies will do whatever they want, succeed or fail as they want, and eventually see a more mature response—again, generally speaking, and at least in Toy Story 5.
Toy Storyas a franchise, it's about coming of age. As of 2018 God of Waras a franchise, it was about maturing and letting go of reckless rage. There are lessons for both when it comes to sharing opinions online, not to mention their broader applications.
