Most of those who have played Astro Bot will tell you that they knew it was a special game as soon as they started playing it. Let's be honest, most of us knew when the first trailer dropped. Astro's wave of momentum continued through the last few months of 2024 and into 2025, with outlets naming it Game of the Year left and right. Many have done so that it now has more GOTY awards than any other platform game in history.
That's according to a site that tracks Game of the Year awards (thanks, NextGenPlayer). According to the data on the website Astro Bot has won 104 awards and counting. While it's nowhere near the overall record holder – that record may always belong to Elden Ring – it seems to be enough to make it the most successful platformer of all time and surpass 88 It Takes Two awards collected in 2021.

It Takes Two is the only other platformer to win more GOTY awards than any other title in a single year, at least during The Game Awards era, but that doesn't automatically mean that Astro Bot has won more GOTY awards than any other platformer. There could have been a year where a big platformer won a lot of awards, only to be beaten by something like Elden Ring or The Last Of Us Part 2. That turned out not to be the case.

Making it the most awarded platformer of all time
One platformer I immediately went to when I checked the GOTY results to make sure Astro Bot was indeed the new record holder was Super Mario Odyssey. While 37 Odyssey awards go and show how underrated good platformers have been as we head into the awards season that came out the same year as The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. It seems likely that if BOTW hadn't come out in 2017, a lot of its GOTY would have gone to Odyssey and the platformer wouldn't have finished third behind Horizon Zero Dawn.
This is worth noting the GOTY tracker goes back to 2013so the year before The Game Awards started and the title that Geoff Keighley's show named the best of the year was unofficially approved as the big one. However, the site appears to be counting back total prices for previous years, with 2012 currently running.
This means that there is a chance that the newly acquired Astro Bot crown will be taken away quickly, although it seems unlikely. While a game like Super Mario Galaxy 2 will no doubt be named Game of the Year by several outlets in 2010, with fewer awards, it's highly unlikely to take home more than 104 trophies. Astro will continue to reap the rewards over the next few weeks. 15 more and it will overtake 2019's GOTY, Death Stranding.
