D4 Shield of Retribution Paladin Leveling Build

Leveling in Diablo 4 has changed in the latest expansion, Lord of Hatred. Getting to max level and progressing to Torment tiers can be difficult, even with the tanky Paladin class. The skill trees have been streamlined, but that also makes it hard to decide the best and most efficient way to level.

This leveling build for the Diablo 4 Paladin class mixes the right amount of defense and offense to give a smooth experience all the way up to max level. Even though some legendary aspects will make the build better, no specific gear is required for this build.

Diablo 4 Paladin Juggernaut Shield of Retribution Build

This build is all about taking hits and using the Paladin’s shield as a weapon. It focuses on Juggernaut skills and Thorns damage to provide a fast-paced and hard-hitting play style using the tankiness of the Juggernaut Paladin Oath.

Once the Shield of Retribution upgrade for Blessed Shield is unlocked, the main damage in this build revolves around building Resolve stacks and stacking Thorn Damage for Shield of Retribution. The Juggernaut Oath makes skills with the Juggernaut tag consume Resolve stacks to deal extra damage, so the Shield will hit like a truck. The concept is fairly simple:

  • Start with Clash to get Resolve stacks, Thorns, and increase the Retribution chance.

    • Use at least once every six seconds.
  • Use Fanaticism Aura active to Weaken enemies

    • Modifiers allow Weakened enemies to Fortify and heal you.
  • Use the Defiance Aura active for a big burst of damage.
  • Cast Shield of Retribution three times.
  • Use Rally and keep it up for the Movement Speed Buff.

Before the Punishment upgrade for Clash and the Shield of Retribution upgrade for Blessed Shield are unlocked, players can use Holy Bolt and normal Blessed Shield.

Upgrades

Clash

  • Resolve
  • Crusader’s March Effectiveness
  • Punishment

Blessed Shield

  • Damage Bonus
  • Cast Speed
  • Shield of Retribution

Fanaticism Aura

  • Extra Passive Stack
  • Potency
  • Rite of Redemption

Defiance Aura

  • Unstoppable
  • Potency
  • Rite of Thorns

Rally

  • Duration Bonus
  • Unhindered and Movement Speed
  • Words of Sacrifice

Fortress

  • Free Cast
  • Resolve Damage Bonus
  • Rampart of Thorns

Rally is what makes this build move very fast. Words of Sacrifice allows the Movement Speed bonus to stack up to 3 times, which equals incredible speed. The only downside is that it changes the skill cost to Health instead of Faith, so it can be dangerous without passive healing bonuses on gear.

If health is an issue, use the Words of Rejuvenation upgrade for Rally instead of Words of Sacrifice.

Fanaticism and Defiance Auras are great because their main benefit comes from their passives, which are always active. Fanaticism increases Attack Speed and Crit Chance, while Defiance increases Armor and All Resistances. When you have multiple Resolve stacks and Thorns, the Defiance Aura active ability becomes a nuke that deals 500% of your Thorns damage in a large area.

Fortress is the Ultimate of choice, and it is a huge damage cooldown. Free cast allows you to cast skills with no cost while inside the Fortress area. Rampart of Thorns deals 500% of your Thorns damage every second to enemies inside. It has a long cooldown, so this is best used on really tough enemies, like Bosses.

Paladin Oaths

In Diablo 4, Oaths are completely passive Paladin class mechanics, but they greatly impact how the game is played. This build uses the Juggernaut Oath, which uses Resolve stacks to increase damage and size when casting a Juggernaut skill, and no longer consumes Resolve when getting hit.

By default, Resolve increases Armor, so this gives increased survivability on top of the stacking damage increase. There are also multiple skills and legendary aspects that interact with Resolve to make the leveling experience stress-free.

It is okay if you don’t have all or any of these aspects since the build functions without them, but they will make the leveling process in Diablo 4 smoother. That said, the main ones to look out for early on are Accelerating, Spiked Armor, and Lapa’s Scripture. Accelerating gives much-needed attack speed early on, while Spiked Armor and Lapa’s Scripture both grant extra Thorns.

Might, Glynn’s Anvil, and Indomitable are the defensive powers that increase Armor and Damage Reduction. Glynn’s Anvil also increases max Resolve stacks to boost armor and damage.

For bonus damage increases, Redirected Force and Juggernaut’s Covenant are fantastic. Redirected Force will increase Crit Damage based on Block chance. Juggernaut’s Covenant grants additional damage when consuming Resolve with the Juggernaut Oath.

Finally, Swift Sprint and Voracious Rage help round out the aspects with increased Movement Speed and Resource management. Swift Spring grants stacking movement speed when losing Resolve, while Voracious Rage has a chance to refund a percentage of the Core skill’s cost when it kills an enemy.

Shield

The Thorns stat is huge because the build and Core skill, Shield of Retribution, revolve around it. Life on hit is especially useful, so you can use Rally’s Word of Sacrifice upgrade without fear of dying.

Paragon is unlocked after leveling to 70, so this is a preview of what’s to come in Diablo 4 Endgame builds. These boards and glyphs synergize well with this build. The important thing is to look out for the Revenger, Spirit, Sentinel, Outmatch, and Chip glyphs while playing.

The legendary nodes and glyphs listed above will greatly increase damage, armor, and movement speed as you climb through paragon ranks and deeper into Torment in the endgame.

Mercenaries

Mercenaries add extra free benefits, so don’t forget to include them. While leveling, you can be more flexible, but the following two work well:

  • Subo – Hired Mercenary
  • Raheir — Reinforcement

Subo passively reveals all enemies and materials in the area map, which is useful while leveling. He can also set traps to Knock Down enemies and inflict Vulnerable. Raheir can cast helpful defensive moves like Bastion, which places a bubble that redirects 90% of damage taken to him for 5 seconds. Set this as your Basic skill so he can use it as soon as it is available.

Leveling Paladin can be slow at the beginning, but it picks up quickly. This Diablo 4 Paladin leveling build will have you cruising to level 70 as an unstoppable, hard-hitting, defensive Juggernaut.
