Pearl Abyss has no plans to slow down Crimson Desert's hot updates

Crimson Desert turned out to be one of the most anticipated and ambitious games of 2026, and for many players, it more than delivered. Despite significant flaws at release, Pearl Abyss has since released ten major updates in just three short months, with several patches dropped in the first few weeks. Even though it's a single-player game, the update frequency more closely reflects what you might expect from a live service title, building on Pearl Abyss' experience working on Black Desert.

I spoke with Will Powers during Summer Game Fest to dive deeper into the breakneck pace of the team's updates, his design philosophy, and plans to bring gameplay parity to characters like Damian and Oongka.

The art of listening to your players

Before the conversation even started, there was a silent question in the air that the community still wonders about: how come Pearl Abyss is getting these updates so quickly? Well, it's in the company's DNA at this point, thanks to its experience developing Black Desert for so many years.

Crimson Desert may be a single-player experience developed by a separate team, but the underlying principles apply across games. “The DNA of the company is inherently a live service. So even though it's a single-player game, it doesn't change the core identity of who the developers are and how they want to support the community,” Powers tells me.

To put it into perspective, the Black Desert team has released a weekly update for over 11 years. With that kind of precedent, it's no wonder the Crimson Desert team has been so quick to respond to player feedback with a series of quick updates, from bug fixes to sweeping quality-of-life changes like improving the save system.

So how do they decide which feedback to act on? Powers isn't quick to reveal the team's secrets, but he did offer a glimpse behind the development curtain. “We listen intently to every single piece of feedback we get, but keep the DNA of what the game is,” says Powers. “That's incredibly important because you can very easily listen to vocal minorities and let them shape the game and lose the core of the game again.”

While he wouldn't offer specifics, Powers was clear that the team is reviewing feedback from multiple sources, so if you want to write them a letter, your feedback may find its way into a future update.

Bright future for Damian, Oongka and Crimson Desert DLC

Another reason why Pearl Abyss has been so quick to address player concerns is that many of them are already in tune with gut feelings. However, with the major issues now resolved, Powers explains how the studio is acting on its own vision of what's to come. “I think the impression from the initial post-launch development was very reactionary. This is taking back control.”

On June 2nd, Pearl Abyss released their Q3 schedule detailing the major updates we can expect to be added by September. However, no hard dates are set as the team may be ready ahead of time, which wouldn't surprise me given the speed of the updates so far. “If they want to develop things faster, I'm not going to stop them,” Powers says. Pearl Abyss is primarily focused on releasing updates when they are ready rather than meeting specific deadlines.

Damian and Oongka's names stood out among the exciting changes planned on the roadmap, as these party members had largely been in Kliff's shadow thus far. Players have struggled to justify playing as Oongka or Damian over Kliff due to their glaring limitations, such as the lack of abilities needed to solve puzzles. “The game's parity is the ultimate goal,” Powers clarifies. So while we may not see Damian or Oongko vying for the title of protagonist outside of Kliff, all three characters will have the same footing when it comes to experiencing the world and its varied puzzles.

While the changes to Damian, Oongka, and key cutscenes are among the most exciting updates to the roadmap, there's something even bigger on the horizon: DLC. So far we have only received updateand despite how massive the overhauls have been, the DLC promises more than just these updates, according to Powers. “It's going to be significantly different, whether it's the scope, the scale, the size, it's going to be different. What that means behind that, we're not talking about that yet.”

Crimson Desert is constantly evolving and growing. Whether it's the addition of baby Wyverns that can fly almost anywhere, or the expansion of key characters like Damiane and Oongka, Pearl Abyss refuses to let yesterday's mistakes become tomorrow's failures.

Its commitment to constant updates has set the tone for a fast-paced single-player game that redefines our expectations. They've already added unexpected treats like a slot machine, so there's no telling what other surprises may be in store.
