Each game is coming to PS Plus in September 2024

PlayStation Plus used to be a subscription service that gave you a few free games each month and access to other titles' online features. Needing to come up with something that looked a little more like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation shook things up in 2022 by introducing the tiered PS Plus system. You now have three options to choose from: Essential, Extra and Premium. Each level costs more than the previous one, but paying more gives you access to more features and a larger library of games.

Essential is the same as the old PS Plus. The cheapest option that lets you play online and gives you a few free games every month. Extra offers you much more by opening up a library of PS4 and PS5 games that you can download and play for the price of your subscription. Last but not least is Premium, which includes everything you get with Extra plus access to a library of PlayStation classics as well as previews of various new games. New games are added to each tier every month, and below you'll find what you'll get throughout September, regardless of which tier you're signed up for, as well as links to upgrade your subscription or sign up if you don't currently have PS Plus.

The cheapest tier of PS Plus is Essential, which is essentially what Plus was before its 2022 overhaul. The tier you need to play most games online, and the one that gives you a few free games each month. These aren't just games that you can play for a month and are replaced by others four weeks later, but games that you can download and keep as long as you have a PS Plus subscription. If your subscription expires, the games you downloaded for free will be waiting for you when you log in again.

The most exciting game included in the PlayStation Essential lineup this September is Little Nightmares 2. Little Nightmares 3 doesn't have a firm release date yet, but the game preceding its release via PS Plus is a promising sign that the next game will indeed be here in 2025, as was promised. Whether you're new to the series or need a refresher, Little Nightmares is well worth your time and will be available to pick up starting September 3rd.

On a similar but very different topic, with MLB The Show 25 launching in March 2025, PlayStation wants as many people as possible to play the latest version of the game, which is why they're offering MLB The Show 24 for free. A common practice for most sports sim games that come out annually is to lure new and old fans with a free game to make them want to pay for more in a few months. You'll also be able to play Quidditch Champions via PS Plus Essential day one when it releases on September 3rd.

If you're reading this before September 2nd, you have until midnight EST tonight to qualify for the August base games before they go back to full price.

The last of us part 1

September 26, 2024

If you've subscribed to PS Plus Extra, you get access to the entire library of PS4 and PS5 games. Like Xbox Game Pass, Extra gets new titles every month, and like its Xbox equivalent, some games retire. August was a huge month for Extra subscribers, with The Witcher 3, Cult Of The Lamb and more joining its library, and all of these titles will remain available to pick up and play until PlayStation says otherwise.

Less about August and more about September, as we now know a whole host of new and returning titles coming to Extra this month, and the headliners are big. Plucky Squire, the highly anticipated and innovative platformer from Devolver Digital, will be available on Extra on its release date, September 17th. Even if Plucky Squire isn't your type (what's wrong with you?), there are plenty of others coming with it on the same day.

There's still a little more that joins the extra catch for September that was announced during PlayStation State Of Play on September 24th. Most of the revelations about PS Plus were about what's coming in October, it was also confirmed that The Last Of Us Part 1 will be available. on Extra and Premium from September 26. The $70 remaster of the original game, which was previously available through a trial on Premium, will be on Extra starting this Thursday. One of the many games that will look even better on the upcoming PS5 Pro.

If you've subscribed to Premium, you'll get everything in the Extra library with the bonus of a premium library at your fingertips. Previously a place for PlayStation to slowly start making its back catalog available to play on modern platforms, the classics will be arriving alongside other PlayStation VR2 titles this September, something that has now been a done deal since the first batch was added games for VR. Premium in June.

September's PS VR2 offering is Pistol Whip. A departure from the simulator titles that were added to Premium in July and August, Pistol Whip is a first-person shooter crossed with a fever dream. Quite a VR experience that should be easy for beginners to pick up and play, but a challenge for those who stick around and want to get good at it. The ultimate balance for every developer.

The main reason PlayStation owners subscribe to Premium is the classics, and as expected, one of the September titles is Secret Agent Clank. Its arrival on PS Plus means that every single Ratchet & Clank game can now be played on modern PlayStation platforms. Just as exciting, if you've been playing Astro Bot and wondering who that little bug was, if and when you saved them, meet Mister Mosquito when he arrives on Premium on September 17th.

You no longer need a PS5 to use PS VR2. The headset is now compatible with Steam VR games on PC. However, you will need to purchase a $60 adapter for this, and not all PS VR2 features will work.

Leaving PS Plus

Storm controls her lightning powers.

As always, some games have to leave PS Plus to make room for those to come. Some big games leave the service in September, and you only have a limited amount of time left to play them before you have to pay if you want to spend more time with them. Some will say that your Horizon Forbidden West is the biggest game leaving Plus in September, and they might be right. However, if you ask me, the game on the list below that you should spend all your time with while you still can is Marvel's Midnight Suns.
