Fallout 76 Lifehacks That Make Getting Started In 2025 Simple

After constantly hearing about how far Fallout 76 came, and with the Ohio-centric expansion just around the corner, I finally pulled the trigger to get the game moving again. I have no regrets yet because I am absolutely loving my time in Appalachia and I am drowning in things to do. I still remember some of the common tips that went around years ago when the game first came out, like hoarding wood because it's hard to come by when you really need it, or collecting as many materials as possible from the trash. However, during my early adventures in the West Virginia wilderness, I noticed a few other things that might be helpful to anyone inspired to reboot. Fallout 76 — or try it for the first time — for a Burning Springs update or Season 2 of the TV series.

Small tips that can have a big impact on exploration in Fallout 76

Cutscene with characters in Fallout 76

If you're anything like me, Bethesda RPGs are all about exploration. WITH Fallout 76I've made a conscious decision to avoid main quests until I'm level 50 because I want to get max level rewards from all storylines (the level 20 ramp option helps with this kind of approach). Clearing quests and raiding every nook and cranny for junk was my bread and butter, although it's easier said than done in certain Fallout 76 location. While players can hold down the circle button to activate the flashlight on the PlayStation, the default green light isn't that useful. However, if players enter their preferences, they can mix Pipboy's color to create an aesthetic of their choice. I highly recommend the white color because the brightness of the flashlight becomes day and night, making the process of looting in dark caves and abandoned buildings a breeze.

When players start checking off spaces on the board Fallout 76 world map, they will likely be motivated to travel quickly from point to point. However, it pays to avoid any fast travel over long distances, as the maximum cost rises the further players try to travel at once. An easy solution is to fast travel to the Vault or some yellow area of the center that is between points A and B, as those places are free to travel to. From there, players can travel to their final destination, and since the free location of the “intermediary” brought them closer to said area, the cap cost will be significantly lower. Caps are fairly hard to get early on, and since CAMP building plans and other items are expensive, it's important to keep as much money as possible.

If players are subscribed to Fallout 1st, be for the beauty New Vegas Ranger Armor or the ever-useful Scrapbox can also make use of the Survival Tent. This can be placed all over the open world and acts as a free fast travel point which makes the fast travel discount trick even easier.

Events are something players should never miss out on because even if they are a little under-leveled, there are usually high-level players around who can carry them through fights. As long as players slightly damage each enemy, they will receive XP per kill, and if they stay in the area, they will be rewarded with useful items such as Fallout 76 plans and ceilings after completion. Events are a great source of rewards and level progression, and players will need plenty of Stimpaks and RadAway if they want to stay alive in them. Fortunately, players can essentially double each of these items by diluting them with Purified Water at the Chemistry Station. While this cuts their effectiveness in half, the full version is usually overpowered by the amount of healing or council removal it provides, and the watered down version is more than enough to get the job done.

Other basic advice for Fallout 76 which I would recommend for newbies:

  • Don't ignore the “loot all nearby corpses” button as it's actually one of my favorites Fallout 76 mechanics. It's super satisfying to get bigger chunks of loot and it's a huge time saver.

  • Junk is the hottest commodity in the Fallout 76so pick up and scrap anything that isn't bolted on. Hiding all this junk is easier said than done for people without a Fallout 1. Scrapbox, but the materials are a must for crafting, repairing and building CAMP.

  • Don't sleep on challenges. Fallout 76 it has a solid challenge tracking system as well as plenty of valuable rewards for players to chase in Seasonal Battle Passes. If players keep track of their journals and dailies (as well as one-off character quests), they can earn tons of money over time.

    • Some daily and weekly challenges can be easily completed by pulling items from stashes, as fresh items are not always required. Also, use rerolls for weekly challenges that you feel like you won't finish, as they provide by far the most SCORE points.

  • Check Atom Shop daily even if you don't spend real money. There's usually one or two free items up for grabs each day, be it repair kits, materials, or something else. For those who want cosmetics, the store regularly discounts certain items, so keep your eyes peeled for the price of your dream Fallout 76 Power Armor skin or CAMP item.

  • Invest starting points in strength as carrying weight can be a nightmare until players start upgrading armor to increase their weight limit. SPECIAL cards that impact carry limited are also worth using.

How to make Fallout 76 multiplayer safe and fun

One of the main draws Fallout 76 has always been its multiplayer elements and there is certainly good depth to the interaction with other players. However, there is one part of multiplayer that players should wait for later: PvP. As soon as I left Vault 76, I turned on Pacifist mode in my settings so I wouldn't have to go into PvP at all. Other players usually cannot kill you with this mode activated, with one exception: CAMPs traps. These player-made CAMPs often have tell-tale signs, such as long corridors or tons of wires lying around, and players should leave immediately if they see any of these features. Even in pacifist mode, these traps can kill you, so be careful. Additionally, if you see locked items in the CAMP, DO NOT pick them up. Doing so will make you Wanted, a condition that won't go away until you die (and you'll lose some caps if you do).

However, the reality is that players are unlikely to encounter many traps or imperfect wells. Fallout 76 the community deserves its reputation for hospitality and helpfulness. In the first two days alone, I got a dozen free blueprints, an electric armored chassis, and some level 50 weapons. Don't be afraid of higher level players as they will often be incredibly kind to you just for announcing your presence. Visiting player camps in Fallout 76 it's also a highlight because when you look at them, you'll see the full potential of the game's creative community. Even if you're antisocial like me, there's a lot of fun in emoting high-level players and making a temporary (or long-term) friend.

Finally, it's worth discussing how to work around a few common problems Fallout 76. It's a Bethesda game after all, so one has to expect some humor. Within my first 20 hours Fallout 76I ran into three main mistakes over and over again. Fortunately, there are solutions for two of them and a way to alleviate the third problem:

  1. Stuck in the environment? Pull out your energy armor and enter to escape the place, saving yourself some quick travel caps and a trip back.
  2. Can't trade with a teammate? Enter and exit the public event for the trading opportunity to reappear.
  3. Does your game keep crashing? While occasional crashes will occur regardless, numerous crashes can be stopped by restarting the game approximately every 3 hours. Players have also reported that deleting excess notes can also help, but it helped me choose when to enter and leave the game world.

There are many other little tricks that players will notice the more they play, such as movement Fallout 76CAMP device to adjust the spawn point in CAMP itself, but I can safely say that the above tips made a big difference for me. If you are thinking about giving Fallout 76 go for it, I highly recommend it. With NPCs, factions, and other mechanics like fishing, it's a much deeper and more fun game than it was when I first tried it in 2019. And if you keep these life hacks in mind, you shouldn't have a problem getting into the game just in time for the next major update in December.
