When you start exploring the northwest part of the canyons, biome v Outboundyou'll quickly realize that your RV's engine can't handle the intense heat. After 30 seconds of driving in this part of the map, your engine will overheat and shut down. This becomes a huge pain when exploring this part of the map, downloading plans from the towers and exploring the remaining landmarks. That's why you might be wondering how to prevent your engine from overheating Outboundand how to cool it down when it happens.
How to check engine outlet temperature
You can check the engine temperature of your motorhome on the color indicator in the lower right corner next to the speedometer. The further the white line moves up and towards (or into) red, the higher the engine temperature.
Once the engine temperature reaches the red part of the gauge and stays there for about 5-10 seconds, the engine will overheat and shut down, preventing you from driving. The only way to get back on the road is to get out of the van and cool the engine.
How to cool an overheated engine at the outlet
When your engine overheats, you can cool it down by getting out of the van. This will cause the engine temperature to begin to slowly drop on its own. However, you can cool it down even faster if you open the engine compartment at the back of your van and pour water in by interacting with the engine.
You must have water in your inventory (or RV) to cool the engine. Every time you use water on it, you quickly reduce the temperature by about 25%. If you are limited to water, use only one for quick cooling and let the air cooling do the rest of the work.
While cooling your engine this way will get you back on the road in the short term, it won't take long for your engine to overheat again. As such, you will need to purchase a 'Cooling System Upgrade' from the Vehicle Upgrade Station and then build it from your Workbench to prevent the engine from overheating again.
How to get an engine cooling system upgrade in Outbound
The cooling system upgrade can be purchased from the vehicle research station with the following materials:
-
2x Hardened metal
-
4x electronics
-
10x water
Once you have purchased the upgrade, you must head to the Workbench located above the engine bay in the back of your RV to craft it. This requires:
-
5x Hardened metal
-
4x electronics
Of these materials, Hardened Metal is the only resource you probably haven't had to craft (or come across in-game) yet. It is made by putting red ore into a metal smelter. You can find Red Ore in the northeast of the canyon biome, where luckily your engine doesn't overheat all the time.
Once you get to the north side of the canyon biome, I recommend exploring the east side of this “upper” part of the map. This will allow you to find Red Ore, some signal towers, and other landmarks without your engine overheating. This means you can upgrade the cooling system for your RV's engine before it overheats.
