Legacy Of Atlantis AI Disclaimer spotted on Steam

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis got a new trailer last night at PlayStation's State of Play. In addition to another look at the game, we've been given a confirmed release date: February 12, 2027.

However, a quieter update on the game's development was shared on the Steam page, which appeared this morning. As noted by Eurogamer, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis includes a disclaimer for the use of generative artificial intelligence, which explains exactly how it was used during the game's development.

Generative AI was used in Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, but developers say it was removed or “human-enhanced”

“AI-powered tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content,” the statement said. “All AI-powered assets have been either replaced or modified by humans to preserve the creative and artistic vision of the development team.”

This seems like a way for Crystal Dynamics to get ahead of any criticism, but in reality the wording is so vague that AI-generated assets could still be used in-game. The statement says they were either “replaced or enhanced by humans” – and it's the “enhanced by humans” part that's so troubling. If the AI generates some assets and then you get a developer to play with them and make improvements, many would still consider it an AI generated asset. The basics are AI slop.

We'll have to wait and see what the player base makes of it once the game is in their hands. So far, games have come under fire for abandoning AI assets in their games, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 even losing an award because of it. Similarly, Larian faced backlash after the studio admitted to experimenting with AI art in the conceptual stages of its new games, something it has since gone back on.

Still, we can expect studios to push the boat out and see what they can get away with. Arc Raiders did this with AI voice acting, though the team has since changed their stance on it. It seems inevitable that it will continue to appear in new releases, and it just depends on how much tolerance the gaming community has for it.
