You're trying a speedrun Librarian: Clean out the mysterious libraryor are you simply trying to finish the game in three hours for the Efficiency Librarian achievement? Beating the game as quickly as possible is much more about unlocking Major Magic skills in the right order than manual organization. Players who follow the success of Efficiency Librarian they can easily earn it by optimizing their Major Magic unlock order.
Major Magic can completely change the way Librarian: Clean out the mysterious library is played and turns the game into a cooldown manager. If you are a first time player or enjoy sorting books by hand, it is recommended that you put some points into the Insight and Shelf Guide and don't worry about speed.
Major Magic Upgrade Command for Speedruns (TL;DR)
-
Two points in Insight to quickly complete the three-volume series.
-
Max Assemble to stop manual searching and sorting.
-
If you don't know where the series go, score a few points in the shelf guide.
-
Max Auto-Shelving to stop manual shelving.
-
Get a point in Sort when the auto put is on cooldown.
-
Max Shelf Guide so you always know where your books belong.
How major and minor magic work
You get points that you can use to level up Major Magic when you completely put down a complete series of books. At first, you only need to put down two series to get a point, although the required amount increases over time.
Minor magics are obtained by finding hidden keys and unlocking chests on the second floor. For more information, check out our All Key Locations and Minor Magic Upgrade Guide.
Understanding Volume Structure 3-5-10
Each book series in the game is either three, five, or 10 volumes long, with the three- and five-volume series on short shelves and the 10-volume series on full-length shelves. This is very important to understand because you'll want to prioritize putting away three-part streaks first to get the main magic points as quickly as possible.
Our book location guide also ranks each series alphabetically, making it easier to identify the shorter three-part sets during speedruns.
First, get a little magic
Before you worry about upgrading your main magic, you should at least use the red key to unlock the high jump permission. This allows you to jump right between and across floors, making things much faster.
You may also want to run with additional keys to unlock the Run Permit and Carry Capacity buffs, though you can grab them later between cooldowns in Major Magic if you're really trying to optimize.
If you need more details, check out our guide to unlocking Minor Magic.
The best main magic upgrade command for fast runs
Here is a highly optimized progression path. This Major Magic enhancement order works especially well for players trying to complete the game in less than three hours for the Efficiency Librarian achievement.
Step 1: Shelf Monsterology: Introduction to Forbidden Beast
The complete Monsterology: An Introduction to Forbidden Beast series is in front of you as soon as you launch the game. Drop this streak into 1A and you'll be halfway to getting your first skill point.
Step 2: Focus on romance, daily magic, and math
Your goal now is to get one more skill point as quickly as possible, and that's really the hardest part of running. While there are many ways you can approach this goal, we recommend that you focus on finding books about everyday magic, math, and romance.
These themes are visually distinct and feature many three-part series, making them perfect for a quick second point. Here's what you should be looking for:
|
Subdue |
Visual clue |
|---|---|
|
Daily Magic (2C) |
Pastel colored books that focus on mundane tasks. |
|
mathematics (2D) |
Books with spine insignia depicting a book inside a shield. |
|
Romance (2l) |
Pink and purple books with romantic titles. |
If you're struggling to quickly identify specific titles or topics, our complete book placement guide details every shelf, topic, and series in the library.
Step 3: Get a few levels in Insight
Once you've completed a Daily Magic, Mathematics, or Romance three-part set, put the earned point into Insight.
When you use this ability, the books in the series of the highest book you are holding will temporarily glow yellow. Take the 3 volume book you started putting away but didn't finish, use the ability to find the rest of the series and put them all away for another skill point. You can also put this point into Insight to reduce the cooldown and increase the duration.
Step 4: Maximum build
Continue to use Insight to complete the short sets you've started putting off and put every point gained into maximizing Assemble.
Using this skill will cause books from the series of the highest book you're holding to fly to you, and you'll initially use it to quickly complete sets of three. At max level, Assemble can instantly collect enough books to complete entire 10-volume sets.
It's recommended that you know where at least some of the other subjects go during this phase so you don't have to stick exclusively to daily magic, math, or romance. I suggest the following:
|
Subdue |
Visual clue |
|---|---|
|
Destruction Magic (1M) |
A gem on the back. |
|
Alchemy and Potion Making (1N) |
A tree on the cover. |
|
Curses and Dispels (1C) |
Black books with red lettering. |
Step 5: Max Auto-Shelving
Once Assemble is maxed out, focus on the Auto-Shelving upgrade.
This skill causes the books you are holding to be automatically placed on the shelf you are standing in front of and can be activated multiple times before entering cooldown. The idea is to create a loop where you grab any book, press Build to complete the series, use Auto-Shelving to automatically put it away, and repeat.
(Optional) Shelf guide
If you already know where the other topics belong, you can skip the Shelf Guide for now, which highlights the shelf for the tallest book you're holding. However, I'm happy to bump this skill up a few levels and increase Auto-Shelving at the same time. While this may not be optimal, it reduces the cognitive load and minimizes the chances of not knowing where to take the series.
Step 6: Get Sorted
After you get Auto-Shelving to max, put a point in Sort. This skill automatically arranges the books you're holding into numerical order and can be useful during short intervals when auto-shelving is on cooldown.
Step 7: Maximum Shelf Wizard
Now you're ready to use a shelf guide that makes it easy to always know where to take the books you're holding. From there, simply use your skills on cooldown until you beat the game and get the Efficiency Librarian.
Why collecting is the most important skill for an effective librarian
Compilation is an essential skill because it means you never have to search the library or do any manual sorting. When you add Auto-Shelving to the mix, things really snowball, but you can complete a very quick run with just Assemble.
How to effectively use main magic during quick runs
For simplicity, here's how you should use your abilities in each phase of the game:
Premature change of game
-
Use Insight on cooldown to complete partially delayed short sets.
Substitution in the middle of the game
-
Use Assemble on cooldown to complete a three part series.
-
Continue to use Insight to manually complete sets when Build is not available.
-
Use Auto-Shelving on cooldown to automatically shelve bursts.
Late-Game Rotation
-
Take any book and use Assemble to complete the series.
-
Use the shelf guide to figure out where it goes.
-
Use the Auto-Shelving feature to shelve the batch when you arrive.
-
If Auto-Shelving is on cooldown, use Sort to manually save the series.
Why you should do a Low-Magic Run first
As mentioned at the beginning, this approach is a complete game changer, and I would recommend completing a run with minimal to no magic first. Here's why:
-
Manual organization and shelving can be fun.
-
There is an achievement, Anti-Magic Master, for completing the game without using major magic.
-
You'll learn a library layout that will make the early stages of speedruns go much smoother.
Tips for Librarian Effectiveness
If you're trying to finish the game in three hours, keep these simple tips in mind:
-
Get your Minor Magic early.
-
Focus on unlocking Major Magic and using them on cooldown, not manual sorting.
-
Library knowledge is helpful, but you can make up for it with the Shelf Wizard ability.
