Re:Zero: 17 Strongest Anime Characters (So Far)

From the Witch of Envy to the Sin of the Archbishop, there are many characters in Re:Zero that display a staggering amount of power, and more are sure to come.

And speaking of Shaul, the guard of the watchtower is not a wise sage at all. She is a student of Flugel, the wise man who built the watchtower and the same man who planted the seed of the Flugel Tree in Re: Zero. Now Subaru is ready to conquer the library, but the trials waiting inside may break him first.

Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 4 finally allows Subaru and Shaul to talk. After saving Subaru from the Hungry Horse King in the third episode, Shaula welcomed him to the Pleiades Watchtower as her long-lost master. Strangely, Shaula believes that Subaru is his master not because they look alike, but because he smells the same to her.

Meanwhile, Subaru's group is finally reunited, all thanks to Shaula's efforts. Even Rem and Patrasche are safe under the care of the healing spirits inside the tower. Unfortunately, the spirits cannot heal Rem because her condition is neither an illness nor an injury. Subaru then asks Ram to take care of her sister and Patrasch before climbing the tower with the rest of the group.

Cope! I've been waiting so long! -Shaula to Subaru

To ensure everyone's safety, Subaru forces Shaula to swear a promise to him. Shaula promises not to harm anyone in Subaru's group no matter what happens. However, Subaru remains uneasy about Shaula, knowing that their bond rests solely on her belief that he is the same person as her master. If Shaula finds out the truth that Subaru isn't a Flugel, there's no telling what would happen to them inside the watchtower.

Flugel is Shaula's master, the same person who built the Pleiadian Watchtower, which serves as a vantage point for intruders looking for the seal stone where the mysterious witch of envy is imprisoned. The watchtower is also a library where Subaru and his friends can find everything they need and want to know.

Unfortunately, Flugel has been missing for 400 years, leaving Shaula to guard the tower alone. All this time she was alone, shooting intruders like Subaru with her hellfire to protect the tower as ordered by Flugel. As mentioned, Shaula believes that Flugel and Subaru Natsuki are the same person, allowing Subaru to climb the watchtower without dying a brutal death, at least for now.

Subaru challenges the trial on the third floor of the Watchtower

Did Subaru pass the third floor test?

The third floor of the Pleiades Watchtower Library is known as Taygeta. It's a white room that Julia thinks would rob Subaru of his sense of balance the longer he stays in it. And according to Shaula, only those who qualify to enter the archive can pass the complex exam on the third floor.

Inside the white room, Subaru discovers a lone monolith that multiplies into countless others when touched and asks a riddle question at the same time. It takes Subaru to name the hero that Shaula defeated with “greatest splendor”. Except for Subaru, the rest of the group couldn't come up with the right answer. Shortly after observing the monoliths from above, Subaru immediately knew the answer to the question.

Only those who know about constellations or asterisms could answer the question, meaning Subaru is the only one capable of solving the riddle. The correct answer is Rigel, the brightest star in the constellation Orion. As it turns out, the question is not about Shaula, the guard of the watchtower, but about Shaula, the scorpion who killed the hero Orion in the story. Just like that, Subaru passes the test on the third floor and moves forward with the rest of the group.
