Should you obey Vlaakith and kill your guardian in Baldur's Gate 3?

If you're hoping to find out why everyone was looking for the Artifact for most of the first act Baldur's Gate 3unfortunately you will have to wait a little longer. However, visiting the Githyanki nursery and talking to Vlaakith will begin to reveal some of the secrets they keep from you.

Visiting the manger is also vital to Lae'zel's personal story, which is why he will constantly haunt you until you leave. Whether you agree with Lae'zel's ideas or not, the location of Creche Y'llek and Rosymorn Monastery is not something you want to skip. After all, the Githyanki are the ones who attacked your nautiloid ship.

Updated May 31, 2026 by Kaitlyn Peterson: This guide has been updated to include an additional outcome where you can reject Vlaakith and still live to tell the story, and now includes a breakdown of how to achieve each of the different outcomes. Talking to Vlaakith is a huge turning point in Baldur's Gate 3 and for Lae'zel's personal quest line. Understanding what choices you have and where they can lead is important and can shape the rest of the game and Lae'zel's future.

Should you give the artifact to the inquisitor?

Close-up of the Inquisitor in Baldur's Gate 3.

It is possible to miss this opportunity because you must attempt to surrender the artifact. Most people think that handing over an artifact to some bloodthirsty, rude people will not end well; therefore they reject it.

However, The artifact is bound to you, so no one can actually take it from youeven if you try to give it to them. with that in mind showing the Captain the Artifact is the easiest way to be invited to speak with the Inquisitor.

After seeing this, the captain will unlock the magical barrier in her room, allowing you to pass to the back of the Manger. Alternatively, you can kill the captain and then destroy the nearby crystal stone next to an obstacle to progress.

When talking to the Inquisitor you will have two options:

  1. Refuse to craft an artifact: This will cause the Githyanki around you to become hostile. After defeating them, Vlaakith will appear.
  2. Submit the artifact: This will immediately trigger Vlaakith to appear, at which point you will speak to her directly.

It is strongly recommended to hand in the artifact at the beginningas it will keep things calm and allow you to talk to Vlaakith without immediately pissing off Lae'zel if he's with you. If you decline, you'll end up missing out on more content.

If Lae'zel is with you, this is important to be aware of Lae'zel can go against you and even try to kill you unless you follow the Inquisitor's and Vlaakith's orders.

Baldur's Gate 3 Lae'zel addresses Vlaakith

If you visited Ghustil in the infirmary before this event and allowed her to try to heal you or Lae'zel, then to have the option of having Lae'zel resign.

After reminding Lae'zel that the cure didn't work and almost killed her or you, what you say will follow. You can try to convince Lae'zel without going to the infirmary first, but the DC will be very high.

If you don't have Lae'zel with you for this meeting, you will then give her a summary of the events at the camp and you must convince her that it was the right thing to do.

Baldur's Gate 3: How to defeat Githyanki's Inquisitor

The Githyanki Inquisitor and his allies at the end of the githyanki manger are formidable opponents in Baldur's Gate 3. Here's how to take them down.

Should you listen to Vlaakith?

The player and his party standing in front of the Artifact in Baldur's Gate 3.

Once you start talking directly to Vlaakith, you'll have a few options on how to proceed. Initially, you will have the opportunity to kneel and show respect, which is not required of you. Instead, you can respond by asking who it is, but avoid being downright rude when choosing dialogue options because it won't end well.

From this point on, you will have three main options:

Choice

The results

Listen to Vlaakith and enter the Artifact

If you enter the Artifact at Vlaakith's request, you'll have the option to kill your Guardian, but you can also decline once you're inside. Both options will eventually lead to a hostile Crech upon exiting as you fail to fulfill Vlaakith's request.

Definitely reject Vlaakith

You can somewhat politely refuse to enter the Artifact and kill your Guardian. This will result in Vlaakith asking the Githyanki to kill you and you will be drawn into a fight with everyone in the room. However, once you've finished this fight, you'll still be able to enter the Artifact for a slightly different conversation with your guardian.

Reject and mock Vlaakith

If you're rude and disrespectful when rejecting Vlaakith, like asking her why she doesn't do it herself, she'll “show you Divinity” by killing your entire party and it's game over.

A detailed explanation of how to achieve each of the above options can be found below.

Listen to Vlaakith

Vlaakith smiles in Baldur's Gate 3.

Vlaakith's dialogue

Your answer

“You are allowed to look at me. You are invited to kneel.'

'Kneel” or “Kneel: choke your brutal pride.”

“You bear what is ours.” But are you a friend or a thief?'

'Friend – I came to bring it back to you'

“You must accept. Reject and know my fury.”

“I will do as you wish.

Vlaakith will disappear and you will be able to enter the Artifact where you can try to kill your guardian or withdraw from the deal with Vlaakith. Regardless, the manger will be hostile when you emerge.

If you agree to obey Vlaakith and try to leave instead, Lae'zel will become angry and Creche will become hostile.

Definitely reject Vlaakith

Vlaakith talks about the consequences in Baldur's Gate 3.

Vlaakith's dialogue

Your answer

“You are allowed to look at me. You are invited to kneel.'

“Who exactly are you?”

“You bear what is ours.” But are you a friend or a thief?'

“I didn't steal it, it just… found me.

“You must accept. Reject and know my fury.”

“By no means.” I don't work for delusional tyrants (You could instead have a class-specific option like dialog option number 4, but that's simply a replacement for the generic line listed here and has the same result.) or

“So the dream visitor is inside the artifact… I can't kill them. He protects me from the Absolute.” (This option will result in a hostile response from Vlaakith, in which you can choose option 3: 'No. In fact, I may liberate the one inside,' or option 4, which is a class-specific response that some classes will have.)

Vlaakith will talk about the consequences and ask the Githyanki in the room to kill you before you disappear. Kill them and then you still have the option to approach and enter the Artifact or leave.

Reject and mock Vlaakith

Vlaakith yells at the player in Baldur's Gate 3.

Vlaakith's dialogue

Your answer

“You are allowed to look at me. You are invited to kneel.'

'Stand still – just as you are' or 'Stand tall – in iniquity you are equal to her.'

“You bear what is ours.” But are you a friend or a thief?'

'yours? I found it. The artifact is mine.'

“You must accept. Reject and know my fury.”

'Can't you kill the one inside you? I thought the “gods” were all powerful.'

“Maybe I heard wrong. You would not speak ill of God. Would you like to?'

'I spoke too hastily – please forgive me' (This is the only option that will continue the conversation. If you select 'I just think a real god could kill whoever he wanted” will kill your entire party, which is worth seeing at least once if you save first.)

Vlaakith instructs you to seek forgiveness by obeying her. At this point, you can either enter the artifact or ignore it. Either way, even if you go inside and try to kill the dream visitor, the manger will be hostile when you emerge.

Should you kill your guardian?

Regardless of what you did in the manger, if you choose to enter the Artifact and speak with your Guardian, the results will be more or less the same with similar options.

If you rejected Vlaakith and killed the Githyanki in the room before entering, your guard will have another line of dialogue about being a worthy ally. Additionally, every scenario in which you enter the Artifact gives you the option to kill or spare your Guardian.

Kill your guard.

You attempt to kill your guard by impaling them with their own sword. However, since they cannot be killed, it just reappears perfectly fine. They will be disappointed and notice that you could not be trusted.

They will not retaliate and will continue to protect you but you will damage your relationship with them. This mistrust can block you from potential interactions in the future, including a romantic scene.

Spare your guard.

Your guardian will thank you and things will continue as they should. If Lae'zel is with you, you must to convince Lae'zel that it was the right thing to do through dialogue. If you cannot convince Lae'zel, becomes hostile.

Your Guardian or Dream Visitor is an important part of the entire game and story. The Guardian is the only reason you're alive and not turning into a Mindflayer. Without them, you'd be an Absolute Cultist, or worse, a Mind Flayer. While you don't have to care for the relationship if you choose to, you will miss out on some content if you don't.

How to escape from the enemy Githyanki manger

Statues in the alcove of the Githyanki Creche in Baldur's Gate 3

Once you leave the Artifact, the entire crèche becomes enemy territorywhich makes fast travel impossible. On quickly exit the manger without fighting your way past the Githyanki hordes, look for the western treasure chest in the larger room you are currently in.

Two statues can move here to reveal a secret dungeon related to the Blood of Lathander side quest. A statue that mentions sunrise must point east and one that mentions sunset must face west. Use the party member with the highest Strength and Athletics to move the stuck statue. If you fail, you can also use Grease to move freely.

Inside this dungeon, since it is a separate area, you will be able to fast travel. Alternatively, you can fight your way out of the manger and collect some valuables to keep or sell. Either way, your work here is now done.
