A live battle royale game based on Rebellion Developments Sniper Elite the series has reportedly been canceled. The game was originally announced in August 2024 as a multiplayer-focused spin-off of the game Sniper Elite titles.
Once considered a low-budget “copycat” series that bucked the trend of WWII-based games, Sniper Elite first debuted in 2005 and told the fictionalized story of an American sniper operating behind Nazi lines. Later Sniper Elite the titles visited other theaters of war and adopted additional mechanics to gain critical and popular acclaim and solidify the franchise's place in the upper echelons of the best stealth shooters. The Sniper Elite the series also became famous for its particular focus on sniping, implementing gruesome “x-ray” kills that show bullets penetrating the head, torso, limbs, and even the private parts of enemies, depending on where the player is aiming. The series even managed its own horror spin-off in the form of a game Zombie army games, pitting skilled shooters against hordes of the undead.

Unfortunately for Rebellion, it appears that its plan to expand the series into the permanent multiplayer space with a game codenamed “Project Archipelago” has been scrapped. According to a report from Insider Gaming, Project Archipelago is no longer moving forward despite its announcement being less than four months old. The game was also known as “Sniper Island” and was supposed to be multiplayer Sniper Elite The Battle Royale title pits teams of players against each other.
Developer Rebellion is reportedly canceling Sniper Elite Battle Royale
According to the report, the reason behind the cancellation of the Archipelago Project is not related to development issues, but rather the loss of funding from Tencent, which financed the project. In meetings, Rebellion staff suggested that fate Concorda multiplayer hero shooter from Sony, influenced Tencent's decision to raise funds from Project Archipelago. Concord was a major project for PlayStation Studios, but was considered a failure soon after its debut. The game was discontinued less than two weeks after launch, and its developer, Firewalk Studios, was shut down at the end of October 2024.
While the apparent loss of Project Archipelago is unfortunate, it does not appear to have affected the current staff of Rebellion Developments. The studio has other titles in development, including another major single-player title Sniper Elite series. Sniper Elite: Resistance releases in January 2025 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles and PC, and promises to take the series to France in World War 2, starring a new protagonist who works with the French Resistance against the Nazi occupation.
