Key things
- An exclusive clip at NYCC shows a battle with Gorn ships and marks an action-packed start to Season 3.
- Rhys Darby joins the cast in a mystery role, fueling fan speculation about the classic Star Trek characters.
- The showrunners have been hinting at Season 3 with odd words like “dance, murder, and surprise,” building anticipation for the upcoming episodes.
last weekend Star Trek cast and showrunners gathered at the New York Comic-Con (NYCC) held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. As usual, the panels were packed with updates on upcoming seasons of shows on Paramount+ Star Trek universe and fans finally got some exciting information about Season 3 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Information about the upcoming Paramount+ prequel season Star Trek: The Original Series has been sparse since the big reveals at San Diego Comic-Con in July. There was little for fans to do, aside from some behind-the-scenes photos of the cast and the occasional update from the showrunners. Behind-the-scenes clips and photos confirmed that the entire crew of the Enterprise bridge would return in Season 3, but beyond that, fans were left guessing. Luckily, they got some exciting answers at NYCC — and even more to speculate about — including three big reveals.

An exclusive clip captures the epic battle
During Paramount+ Star Trek space panel at the convention, fans got a second look at the actual Season 3 scene. The three-minute clip picks up roughly where Season 2 left off, with the Enterprise and her crew engaged in a brutal battle surrounded by Gorn ships. Anson Mount's Captain Pike looks uncharacteristically stunned as Una repeatedly asks for orders.
After the bridge crew asks their crew to come up with options to save their compatriots who have been kidnapped by the Gorn, they come up with some great ideas in the iconic Star Trek fashion. After knocking out several of them, they eventually land on the beacon attachment to an unarmed torpedo and shoot it down at the Gorn ship.
The clip confirmed what fans had assumed – that the third season would pick up where the classic Trek cliffhanger of the second season left off. It also confirms that at least at the start of Season 3, the conflict with the Gorn will escalate. If this scene is representative of the season, it promises to be an action-packed ride.
New cast member revealed
Perhaps the most exciting news of the weekend was the announcement that Our flag means death and Jumanji: The Next Level actor Rhys Darby joins the cast in a mysterious guest role. Showrunners have hinted that Darby is portraying Legacy Star Trek character, but I wouldn't say more, which has sparked speculation throughout the fandom.
Strange new worlds has already shown fans what several TOS the characters were only years before Kirk took over the Enterprise. However, there are plenty of main and supporting characters that fans have yet to meet, most notably Leonard “Bones” McCoy, the Enterprise's chief medical officer.
Weird Season 3 Story Hints
During the panel with Strange new worlds showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and actors Ethan Peck (Spock) and Carol Kane (Pelia), the host asked each of them to describe the show's third season in just three words. Their selection was interesting to say the least.
Goldsman replied, “Get to Season 4.”
Kane said, “Too much fun.”
Peck replied, “History, betrayal, growth.”
But Alonso Myers' answer was by far the best: “Dance, murder and surprise.”
Since Jonathan Frakes, who often directs Star Trek episodes as well as the stars in them, has already teased a murder mystery episode, the comment about Alonso Myers' murder makes sense. But the dance? And betrayal? Although the three-word answers didn't reveal much, they build even more excitement for Season 3.
Fans can look forward to the first episodes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 in 2025, although an official release date has yet to be announced.
