The 6 Most Unique Non-Ninjutsu Abilities

The following list contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

Ninjutsu is the basis of most powers Naruto. Even high-level abilities like Baryon mode are essentially extensions of it. However, there are also powers that fall under other types of jutsu, as well as those that do not fit into the three main categories (taijutsu, ninjutsu, and genjutsu) at all. Most of these “outliers” are doujutsu kekkei genkaieye powers that are the result of inherited genetic mutations that have become icons of the franchise. As is synonymous with Super Saiyan Dragon Ball, Naruto is defined by powers such as the Sharingan and Byakugan.

Kekkei genkai aren't exactly jutsu, they're more like biological conditions. While this doujutsu can usually be turned on and off, they basically act as a gateway to perform unique specialized techniques. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the most powerful non-ninjutsu techniques in the series (since shinjutsu is so overpowered, they weren't included in this list to avoid a list consisting only of them).

Sarada's further upgrades could be impressive and alleviate one of her biggest drawbacks in Boruto after the latest Mamushi arc.

Sharingan

The Sharingan is one of the three great doujutsu introduced in Narutoand the most researched of all. It is mostly associated with the Uchiha clan, but not all clan members are able to unlock it. It comes from Kaguya Otsutsuki's Rinne Sharingan.

Unlocking it enhances the user's perception so they can easily observe and copy other jutsu. It also gives them access to many exclusive genjutsu techniques. The Sharingan can also evolve over time, unlocking additional tomoe, and deep trauma can awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, a stronger version of this doujutsu, but this impairs the user's eyesight over time. Finally, transplanting the Mangekyo Sharingan into another user will awaken the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.

Jougan

Introduced in Boruto: Naruto Next GenerationsJougan is a new doujutsu that is said to be associated with the Otsutsuki clan, but was somehow mysteriously awakened by Boruto (probably due to his distant Otsutsuki lineage). Ironically, Boruto later becomes a full Otsutsuki thanks to Momoshiki's karma/Kama.

The Jougan increases the user's chakra awareness, allowing them to sense changes in chakra flow and identify chakra signatures and even sense threats. At first, Boruto is unable to activate it at will, but over time he gains better control over it. Despite other Otsutsuki members appearing in the story, Boruto is so far the only character who can use this power. Jougan may be a shinjutsu, but it has not yet been officially confirmed as such.

Byakugan

The Byakugan is another of the three great doujutsu originating from the Otsutsuki clan, but it works differently than the Sharingan. It's actually a unique doujutsu in the series as it doesn't need to be awakened like the others. The Byakugan is present from birth and users only perfect their activation and use.

Although mostly associated with the Hyuga clan, anyone with Otsutsuki blood could potentially be born with it. His abilities include near 360º vision and penetrating through any object, which also allows them to identify shadow clones.

In the original series, the Byakugan doesn't evolve, but in the movie Naruto: The last one introduced the Tenseigan, which can supposedly only be obtained by a member of the Otsutsuki clan, by combining chakra after implanting the Hyuga's Byakugan. Users typically have distinctly white eyes, but Himawari Uzumaki somehow has ordinary blue eyes that only turn white when she activates the technique. This is one of the reasons why fans believe that he will eventually upgrade his Byakugan despite not being an Otsutsuki.

Rinnegan

IN NarutoThe Rinnegan was the most powerful doujutsu known and one of the three great doujutsu that greatly increased the power of the user. While members of the Otsutsuki clan can apparently unlock this technique on their own, humans can only achieve this power if they have the Mangekyo Sharingan and receive Hagoromo's chakra (or receive the combined chakra of Indra and Asura). Or at least it was until now Boruto: Two Blue Vortexes could expand the tradition of this doujutsu. It can also be transplanted to anyone.

Eight gates

The eight gates are not much in themselves; they are “nodes” in the chakra pathway system. These knots actually restrict the flow of chakra and prevent people from destroying their bodies. However, with diligent training, it is possible to learn to unlock at least some of these gates.

Powerful shinobi such as Might Guy and reportedly Rock Lee are able to release all gates and use their full powers at the expense of their own bodies. The Eight Gates Release Formation is primarily a last resort, but it's also one of the greatest abilities that even those without Otsutsuki ancestry can achieve, and should be explored more in the series.

Gelel Energy

Gelel energy comes from gelel stones, which is an exclusive concept Naruto the Movie: Legend of the Stone of Gelel. It works as an alternative to chakra, and in the movie it is said that the entire deposit of stones could destroy half a continent. Holding one of these stones allows the user to channel and manipulate the energy of the Gelel, increasing their regenerative and destructive abilities. It is mostly considered a filler concept as it only appears in the film.
