Marvel Rivals is seeing an increase in player base following the recent Halloween update which added the much sought after PvE specific game mode. After the launch of Season 4 and the addition of Daredevil and Angela, Marvel Rivals is building on one of its long-time most popular limited-time events.
After a massive launch window in late 2024 Marvel Rivals its Steam playerbase dropped 86% through August, an alarming statistic for a live service game. The issues were seemingly the result of a mix of issues such as performance and balance issues, while some players were less than thrilled with some of the changes that developer NetEase made to the matchmaking system. Despite these challenges, however, Marvel Rivals seems to have found a potential formula to win back many disillusioned players.
Marvel Rivals sees nearly double the number of players on Steam
As part of its Halloween update, Marvel Rivals added its first PvE-specific game mode. Zombies co-op mode allows 4 players to battle waves of zombie enemies and boss battles against UNdead Namor and Queen of the Dead. What adds a bit of intrigue to this game mode is that players can build their character with upgrades and changeable abilities. This new mode seems to have really resonated with fans as the game quickly grew to over 120,000 players, with many on social media also praising the addition of the mode.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Zombies will be a permanent addition as many wish, with a current end date of November 13th. For now, though fans can enjoy some fun with friends in Zombies mode, the Halloween update for Marvel Rivals gives players a free skin. By completing missions, players can participate in the Voyage to Astonish event and earn free rewards by moving around the game board, including unlocking the Blade Knight costume for free.
Leaning on keeping players happy seems to be a priority for NetEase as the studio is also working on another highly anticipated feature. Marvel Rivals it now has a cross progression, albeit in a very limited form at the moment. Although it launched on October 23rd, cross-progression is only available in early access for approved players who have requested to join. If all goes well, the plan seems to be to release it to all players with Season 5 in November.
