As a desert bandit, Yamcha initially antagonized Goku and Bulma with Puar. After learning that the Dragon Balls can grant any wish, he immediately planned to steal Goku and Bulma's golden balls before they could go to Fire Mountain.

When most of Yamcha's plans failed, he decided to fight Goku, not knowing that the young Saiyan knew martial arts better than anyone else.
