Focus at the Mountain Fortress is one of the main stone quests Gothic 1 remake. It is available as part of The Focus Stones, a Chapter 3 main quest that players receive from Saturas at the end of The Water Mages' Plan.

How to start The Focus at Mountain Fortress in Gothic 1 Remake
Focus at the Mountain Fortress is available during The Focus Stones, the main quest Saturas gives you after completing The Water Mages' Plan. Before going after any of the focal stones, you should first visit the tower that Diego marked on your map when he gave you The Water Mages' Plan.
When you reach this tower, talk to the NPCs there and mark the positions of the focal stones on your game map. This conversation will also cause accompanying NPCs to move to their assigned focal stone locations.
Where to find the mountain fortress
The mountain fortress is southeast of the Old Camp. If you visited Diego's marked tower before you left, the location of the focus should already be marked on your game map. However, if needed, you can find the fort using the map above.
When you approach the mountain fortress, you'll find Lester waiting just outside the bridge that leads to it. Talk to him to get a warning about the golem just ahead.
There are dangerous enemies in and around the Mountain Keep, including Harpies. Make sure you have some healing items on hand and make a hand save before trying to cross the bridge.
How to defeat the Golem on the bridge
Lester will warn you that the golem blocking the bridge can only be damaged with a blunt weapon, and you should equip something like a mace or club if you have one handy. Don't worry if you don't have access to a blunt weapon as you can still get through the fight by letting Lester do most of the work.
Lester's mace can damage the golem and it doesn't take too long to knock it down. Just focus on keeping the golem occupied and alive and let Lester handle the offense. Once the golem is defeated, continue across the bridge and follow the winding path up to the mountain fortress, dispatching the harpies along the way.
How to get to the mountain fortress library
After entering the Mountain Fortress, go forward and go through the first door on your right. Climb the stairs, then go through the opening on the right to reach the walkway outside. Follow this walkway, re-enter the keep through the opening on the left and continue up the stairs.
You will soon reach a room with a headless marble statue and paintings on the wall. Proceed to the next room, which is the dining room, and pay close attention to the large painting on the wall. It gives you the solution to the bookshelf puzzle in front of you.
How to solve the mountain fortress shelf puzzle
A large painting in the dining room shows a sea creature eating a wolf and the wolf eating Molerata. This sequence provides a solution to the bookshelf puzzle as it focuses on interacting with the shelves in the correct order. Each library has a creature statue on top and you should work with them in the order shown in the image:
- A library of sea creatures
- The Wolf Library
- Molerat Library
After interacting with the shelves in this order, a hidden door in the corner will open. Crouch through the opening, climb the stairs on the right and follow the path to the ladder used to reach the attic. From there, drop off the edge of the attic into the room below.
Where to find the locked chest in the mountain fortress
After falling from the attic, turn around. The door behind you leads to a locked chest, and although you can complete The Focus at the Mountain Fortress without opening it, the chest contains a suit of Royal Guard Armor. To claim this wearable, you'll need to track down the key on the chest.
You can only get to the location of the key on the chest if you have learned how to climb walls. You can train this ability as part of Aiming High, a side quest that comes from Theron in the swamp camp, and if you don't have it, you should ignore the locked Mountain Fortress chest.
Where to find the key in the locked chest in the mountain fortress
To find the key to the locked chest, start in the room you entered from the attic. Go through the door across the room, climb the stairs and continue to the end where you'll find an opening in the wall.
If you have learned to climb walls, you will receive a Wall Climb prompt when you approach the edge of this opening. Press the entrance that appears and climb up and left to find another opening. Go through this opening, go right and climb the stairs to reach an inner area with some Harpies.
After defeating these enemies, use the outer walkway with stairs to move up. The chest that contains the key to the locked chest is at the top of the stairs, near more Harpies, and you'll need to pick its lock. For more information on lockpicking, see our How to Lockpick guide.
If you really struggle with the chest, use this lock solver. Since lockpicking varies depending on your lockpicking training, it's difficult to provide a one-size-fits-all sequence, so no specific sequence is offered here.
How to get Royal Guard Armor
After looting the key from the chest at the top of the tower, climb back down the wall to return to the locked chest in the attic room. Use the key to open the chest and get the Royal Guard armor inside.
Again, this armor is not required to complete The Focus at the Mountain Fortress and you shouldn't worry if you don't have the wall climbing ability and can't get it. However, if you can climb walls, you can also grab the Royal Guard Armor while in the Mountain Fortress.
How to find a firestone in a mountain fortress
After opening the locked chest or choosing to jump over it, return to the room you fell into from the attic and go to the hole in the wall. Look down and to the right to spot a firestone below, then climb down to it. Now defeat the harpies that appear and interact with the stone to get the Focus from the mountain fortress.
How to get back to Lester
After collecting the Focus from the Mountain Keep, climb back up to the opening you came through earlier. About halfway up, look to the right and take the outdoor walkway that curves around the tower.
This is the same outer walkway you used when you first entered the fort. Follow it back along the route you took earlier to return to the room with the shelf puzzle where Lester should still be waiting.
How to complete the mountain fortress focus
After talking to Lester, you can leave the mountain fortress and return to Saturas when you're ready. Spin the Focus from the Mountain Fortress to complete the quest and move The Focus Stones.
