Fans were hoping to see more God of War game from Santa Monica Studio heads to State of Play, a God of War fans can rejoice. During the State of Play event, the last demo was dedicated to God of War: Laufey, the official new game, and 20 minutes of gameplay.
Before the State of Play event, several rumors suggested that the new God of War A game featuring Kratos' wife Faye and Tyr was in the works. It would reportedly focus on the Giants, her conflict with Thor, and possibly how she met Kratos, with a lot of mythology in play, a talking sword named Merlin, and a gelatin cube. Now fans have their first official look at the full 20 minutes of gameplay and can see which of the new ones God of War the game rumors contained even a grain of truth, if any.
20 minutes of playing
The State of Play trailer opens with Kratos commenting that Faye is free in front of the funeral pyre. Fans can immediately see graphical improvements to Kratos and Atreus, who is now young again. As they say, fans then enter Faye's skin in what appears to be some form of afterlife, and she wakes up startled. Before long, she finds herself battling some plant-like creatures and is joined by a small animal companion, plus a few story details for fans to enjoy on their own and more in the trailer above.
Basically, Faye (also known as Laufey) finds herself on a strange journey after death and must fight through the afterlife of the gods known as Everywhen to protect KRatos and Atreus in life. Set to launch on the PS5 console “soon”, his gameplay will focus on Faye's speed, control and relentlessness.
What's more, rumors hinted at this news God of War the game would explore different mythologies, and given the Mongolian-speaking enemies in the trailer, it certainly looks like that. Not sure how much, of course, but it's an exciting prospect that shows up during the game. Even the gelatin cube and sword are eventually shown to be real (though the intelligence is in the ribbons, not the sword, apparently).
Hopefully this will go down better with the players than the shadow, of course God of War Sons of Sparta a game that dropped earlier in 2026. As I wrote in my review God of War Sons of Spartait's “a good prequel – the problem is that it feels like it was released before the original 2005 game, not just set before it. Its safe approach feels like a game made generations ago, not a game released in 2026, and makes it a forgettable chapter of Krat's life.” At the very least, this new game doesn't feel like a safe entry into the franchise, and that's perhaps even more exciting now.
