Nintendo's other platformers settled into their own identities and time-tested formats decades ago. Yoshi's journey has been a bit more unpredictable, but with this entry he's found an approach that's all his own.

It's not always the most obvious game, emphasizing experimentation over platforming basics, but the collection of weird and wonderful new creatures it contains invites exploration in a way that should delight inquisitive young minds.

What it lacks in story or challenge, it makes up for with clever gameplay mechanics disguised as weird and wonderful creatures. It's unfortunate that some of that magic wears off as you replay it, but even if you fill all the pages of the mysterious book, you're still left with another charming Yoshi platformer to enjoy in peace.
